VA Recoupment of Disable Veterans SSB/VSI Payments

My Disability Comp payments ($3,000/year) have been subtracted from my annual VSI payments for the past 26 years. Not only that, but my divorce decree in 1992 awarded my ex-spouse 46% of the VSI. And then, the VA began to deduct the disability amounts a year AFTER the divorce decree, and so we had to go to court to settle how much she should now receive. But instead of my Ex receiving 46% of the NET VSI (after the VA disability was subtracted), she was granted the 46% percent of the ORIGINAL, Pre-VA amount. In other words, she essentially received 46% of my VA disability payments for the past 26 years. So, not only did I get hosed by the VA, but I got 'screwed' again by my EX...only this time, without a kiss!

Am & the same mess.

VSI is a contract to leave the DoD. It is separations pay, not compensation. VSI should not be recouped.

Need to push veteran organization to lobby congress to make changes in legislation.

I JUST GOT THIS NOTICE OF REPAYMENT, AFTER RECEIVING VA BENEFITS LAST 4 YRS. ITS A SHAME VETS ARE IN DOUBLE JEOPARDY FOR GETTING OUT EARLY TO BENEFIT GOVERNMENT, THEN PENALIZED FOR GETTING INJURED AN COMPENSATED FOR IT.

I received early out incentive in 1994 after 10yrs in Seabees. Now I need VA Disability for ALS due to blast exposure from teaching AT4 rocket launcher fire to about 1200 persons while stationed in Gulfport, MS. Military vets are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to suffer this dibilitating, deadly disease and is automatically considered service connected. So UNFAIR for someone facing this disease.

I FULLY AGREE

We suppose to take care of all veteran regardless, not make it even harder for them and their families by recouping monies from their disabilities.

End the recoupment that was meant to avoid paying for retirement. It should not be associated with VA Disability as retirees now receive payment for both.

This collection for ssb is not right

Homeless vet, recoupment is 100% of my VA Disability @ 60% for the next 13 months. Nothing like making a desparate situation even more desparate! Already homeless, now VA & DFAS making me even more homeless and desparate! Typical Government. They came to collect 25 years after leaving military. Is there any statute of limitations to cover how long VA & DFAS can collect?

Get rid of that law so not to cause hardships for vets

The same thing happened when I was let go in 1992, Downsized with 17 years in the military. It took me 20 years to pay back the 50K they gave us. Now officers it was called severance pay. Enlisted it was an SSB payment.

I agree all payments to vets should never be taken away due to any disability or other payment system. We all serviced our country and protected it compared to the individuals trying to remove our benefits.

i agree with this veteran I am in the same boat I say being they have been taken money from me from 1992 to know then they need to give back my 3 years I gave up then I can retire then being a man with 3 kids at the time the military did not like single dads or moms so lets all fight to get back what is ours god bless

Received SSB in 1993 after serving 15 years. Now VA wants to recoup my incentive pay before I start collecting my disability payment.

How can the United States of America, the richest country in the world continue to allow and condone such unfair and unjust treatment to the men and women who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for Americans to enjoy the freedoms and privileges of a free country.
