Bike Break - Property Tax Breaks for New York Landlords for Building Bicycle Storages

New York City expects more than 1 million new residents by 2030.
To prepare for growth, Major Bloomberg launched PlaNYC, a sustainable solution to New York City's future.
PlaNYC's goal for transportation is to improve travel times by adding new transit options.
Many subway lines and tracks are already used to capacity, making biking a critical method of alternative commuting.
PlaNYC proposes 1800 miles of new bike lanes. However, storage and theft are identified as major obstacles that prohibit people from biking from work to residence.
What is missing?
Introducing BIKE BREAK.
Urban Futurists propose that landlords receive a
property tax break to convert unused building space into a bike storage.
Both commercial & residential buildings will benefit from this legislation.
-If you have a safe place to store your bike at home and at work you will use your bike to commute between these two places.
-Conversion of unused spaces will create jobs, increase real estate value, and stimulate economic growth.

I have been hearing from so many of you who are tired of worrying about your bikes being stripped or stolen the moment you leave them in the hallway. This issue is about making our daily commutes actually possible instead of a constant source of stress. I am currently working on drafting a proposal to present to local officials so we can turn these empty storage rooms into something useful.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me of how many times I have had to carry my own bike up six flights of stairs just to keep it safe. It is heartening to know so many others recognize that simple storage solutions are the key to a better commute for this city.

my bike got stolen off the street 3 times this year living in bushwick. this is way overdue. landlords need an incentive or they will keep charging us to store bikes in our own apartments.
Finally some common sense planning. We need to stop acting like bikes are just toys and treat them like real transit. Make this happen already.

YES. trying to drag my bike up 4 flights of stairs every day is a nightmare.
