Uptown Rideau Under Threat

the best cities in the world are low rise. Let's be a great city, not just an opportunity for developers.

The community design plan circa 2005 had vision, coherency and a place of the pedestrian, the cyclist and the the public transport user. While Rideau Street accommodated the private car and transport vehicles, these were not given the privileged right-of-way as in the City multi-million dollar redesigned Rideau Street, circa 2013-14. The petition concerns the development plan of Ritchcraft, which in isolation may indeed be acceptable in the intensification of the residential accommodation in the inner City in accordance to the Official Plan -podium, 18 story tower and commercial activities at ground level. However, it is incumbent of Council to recognize that the Richcraft Proposal is not isolated and must fit the coherence of the original Community Design Plan. I therefore support my fellow petitioners and ask the Council to instruct the Planning Department for a coherent plan for the whole street including the parallel Besserer Street on the South side, and Lowertown on the North side. The Plan would also be fair to the private developers who need to apply their own imagination of contributing to the community vision, rather than to the rigid constraints, and allowances, of zoning regulations. I participated in the community open houses and early design charettes. The voice of this community is being ignored if this development is allowed.

Respect the Community Design Plans as they are and will be when updated version tabled in the fall.

I reject the proposal by Richcraft to build a high rise building on Rideau St. at Cobourg St.

please keep the original low rise status and develop Rideau Street responsibly and with long term in mind as a downtown lively centre

Sorry earlier problems with comments, I think we need to follow the interests of the community and listen to the consultations. Development on Rideau should be considered, planned and deliberate.

I agree 100% that this is destroying the legacy of Rideau Street.

Let's just stop all this development for a few days/weeks and see how we feel next month. We may like Rideau St. well enough as it is!!

Rideau Street has already been decimated by completely unnecessary high rise condos and offices. Stop the stupidity and total ignoring of by-laws.

Rules are rules, made to be obeyed by all of us, not ignored by some of u,s including developers. What are we to think about how loudly money talks at City Hall?

I recently moved to Lowertown and I love its warm community look and feel. It is full of a variety of residential buildings, schools and shops and letting one high rise to be built will open the flood gates for encroachment of others and an end to the peace of this area.

I work in the neighbourhood and am concerned about the proliferation of concrete canyons.

A bit of long-term thinking and planning can go a long way

We really do care about the look and livability of our community in Sandy Hill, and not just for ourselves but for times to come. That's why it is very upsetting to have the desires of the developers to make as high a profit as possible be the deciding factor for the politicians at City Hall re. the height of buildings, intensification, multilevels under ground parking, etc.

Citizen groups work hard to communicate their wishes to elected representatives. Developers are too often successful in getting their way by doing end runs around the established processes. Time for change!
