Although I live in Western Washington, my most memorable fishing experiences in the state have been on the Yakima. It is a treasure that needs to much more available. When I have fished the Yakima I have gladly spent money for motels and meals as well as guide services.

My family came to the Kittitas Valley sometime before the 1870's. They had unencumbered access to the river for much of their life. At the upper stretch of this section of river we even owned "Newman's Island". While times have changed since the 1870's the river is still there and deserves proper care and appropriate access. It has been my observation that fly fisherman are good stewards of the land and rivers.
I started fishing on the Yakima long before it was catch and release, sometime in the early 1960's. There were many points of access along the river, the fishing was good but not great.
I attended elementary, junior high and high school with Time Irish, the Yakima Rivers first fly fishing guide. As you may know Tim was very influential in changing the fishery from catch and keep to catch and release. The size of the fish in the river have grown and while I don't have the scientific facts at hand my presumption has to be that the quantity of fish in the river has also increased.
The river corridor is kept clean by fishermen and by the involvement of fly shops and dedicated individuals. The same folks that would contribute to the care of this section of river.
Another consideration is the financial one. From no fly shops to the eight or so that now exist monies are brought into the local community. There is also the spending done outside the fly shops for food, gas and housing. Individuals are employed because of the fishing industry in Ellensburg, Thorp and environs. I am not aware of any negatives occurring in regards to the existing access sites along the river corridor.
It is my hope that you will strongly consider opening this section of the Yakima River to boat and foot access. It would be a tribute to my ancestors and to my relatives still enjoying and living in the Kittitas Valley.

Each time I go fishing on the Yakima I patronize at least one business in Kittitas County either buying fuel, lunch, dinner, or supplies for our trip. More acess to the river would mean less crowding between existing access point and provide more opportunities for fisherman and recreation floaters to visit Kittitas County.

Keep the launches open to the public we pay for our fishing license and our discover passes etc. It shouldn't be even an issue we deserve to have access to the river!!

I certainly hope the does aquire more public access sites to this portion of the river. As an avid angler I am sure it would make fishing the river safer; without adequate access people are apt to take chances, make risky decisions. Anglers come from all over to enjoy our river. It's in the best interests of the county to encourage that.
