Earlier this month my sons bantam rep team had a tournament. There was a big rainstorm the night before. The parents and coaches were at the field at 6 am raking, draining, etc. so an 815am game with an Ottawa team would happen.

I was shocked not only at the state of the fields when my sons started playing ball but that they book games for (especially 4/5 year olds) at fields in the middle of neighbourhoods without a washroom facility (ie. Hillview). What are you supposed to do when your child mid game has to go to the bathroom...........you have to get in your car and drive about 10 min - hope your child makes it and then get back when the game is almost over? No washroom facility should mean no games booked there.

Improved facilities will mean more kids will play...and I won't have to drive to Belleville 2 nights a week for my child to play!!

Many of my friends have children who play on these fields. Having seen the condition of them first hand, as well as the condition of the fields of other cities, I can only hope that things improve for my future children. This is about safety, first and foremost. What's more - it's just good for the city to have better conditions.

The ball fields have been on a steep decline since 2004. They did not have to get this bad! Consistent and proper maintenance is all that is required.
For many of the ball parks alternative management should be considered. Lasalle, Cloverdale, and Woodbine for instance could easily be sold to the local ball organizations who can set up volunteer (or paid) grounds keeping.
(I now live in Calgary and my competitive fastpitch association owns and maintains the park we play on. We work together as a league to keep ideal playing conditions.)

I played ball every Sunday as a child and then on an adult fun league. Children (large and small!) require safe places to participate in healthy, outdoor activities.

One would think the city of Kingston would take pride in everything that is part of our city. The ball diamonds are an embarrassment to this city and show our city doesn't take pride in keeping them up. They all need to be renovated. Those with gravel need to be switched to sand. Bleachers need to be fixed. Fences added where they are not fenced in. Lines painted and grass kept cut. Infields raked and kept up. Fields kept up, ruts and holes filled in. I have seen so many injuries on Kingston fields over the years all because of them being in poor shape. It's time for change Kingston! Show that you care and fix our sports fields!

I don't understand how this has become such a problem. It takes no time to cut the grass and keep the infield neat and tidy. Hire some student workers for the summer to do it if you have to but these conditions are unacceptable.

Not all need an upgrade but they definitely need to have a bit more attention to the details of grading and maintenance. Do the city employees get paid extra for neglecting the obvious or is just that the supervisors haven't a clue what really should be done?

The fields our deplorable. We can't convince out of town teams to visit because they are so far below what other municipalities have. Not one of our fields matches the basics we see immediately outside the city. They can't all be built in a day, but a solid plan for gradual improvements, and timely maintenance is required.
