This is a classist policy that disproportionately favours the privileged (who are more likely to have paid for a newer residence) and punishes financially struggling students, making them more likely to drop out. Unacceptable for a university that claims to be accessible to all. Stop academic elitism.

Students are struggling financially enough without the burden of carrying summer rent for a university dorm room they do not need. Do the right thing U Ottawa. Don't force them to pay over the summer.

Paying rent for a University residence all summer makes it very difficult for students to save for their 2nd year, especially when they are paying rent for 2nd year housing as well from May-August. It is not right for the University to take advantage of students this way.

I do not want to pay an extra $3000 for something I did not have the option of choosing. If I did not accept the 12 month lease of Brooks I would not have housing. It is unfair to students who don't even apply to this residence and are forced to pay an extra $3000

I didn't even have the option of another residence. Of all the ones I had applied to, brooks was the only option I was given, and I had no chance to find a job or other apartment to go to because I had gotten such a late reply from housing. The room is basically just going to be a fancy storage unit now.

I find it completely unfair that I didn't put Brooks down as an option to live in when I was applying to res, but got put in it anyways and was told I could accept or take my chances and try to find somewhere else to live in Ottawa off campus. This is a residence, why would we have to pay for the summer?!

The last couple months have been beyond stressful trying to find a sublet for this place not to mention trying to find someone for a place I have off campus now. I never had brooks as a choice when I applied. The university made it seem like it was extremely easy to find someone to sublet for the full amount. Turns out its not and now you're lucky to get $400. I can't believe that now everything from working this summer will have to go towards a place I am not even living in. I don't know whats worst having scammers email me every day or having the university scam us. This isn't right.

The contract for one year is unfair. Students should get a chance to terminate the contract with one month notice.

There should be an option of an 8 month or 12 month lease for the apartment style residences. Especially, considering not all first year students have the option to live in a first year residence.

Brooks is one of the worst possible residences that you can get, the buildings are old and everything inside is in terrible conditions, you don't even have an AC in your room, and they simply just dump students in these rundown buildings and force you to live there for 12 months.

I ended up losing so much first year because of this stupid lease situation. And the way uOttawa made it sound was that if you didn't want the room over the summer, you could "give it back" to the university. So imagine my surprise when I went to do that and was told finding a sublet was my problem... The reality is most summer students pick houses in sandy hill over uOttawa residences, so it really isn't easy finding a subletter willing to pay over $400, and for a $700 room, it sucks.
