As students of the University of Louisville, we understand that our university is grossly underfunded by the government of our commonwealth. The amount of funds pledged, not to mention the amount actually delivered upon, to the university each budget cycle does not communicate a dedication to post-secondary education on the part of our appointees to state government. However, we students find the consistent and seemingly arbitrary tuition increases of recent years unfair and unacceptable.Without any serious attempt to manage spending to avoid tuition increases, our Board of Trustees has repeatedly transferred the financial burden caused by underfunding by the state government to the students of this university. Furthermore, they have done so without allowing opportunities for meaningful student input. We students can bear no more tuition increases. Tuition hikes have far outstripped increases in non-loan financial aid, leaving many of us with no alternative but to work longer hours, accrue more debt, or put an end to our education. We, the students of the University of Louisville, call upon our university administration to rededicate itself to us. With this petition, we demand that the President, Provost, Board of Trustees, and all others involved with budgetary decisions explore every possible avenue available to them to ensure that tuition rates do not increase beyond inflation for 2008-2009.
