University of Birmingham car parking

It is particularly an issue for members of my unit when, for example, we are teaching off campus and have to pick up and drop off equipment and materials and there are therefore no public transport alternatives

It's terrible that closing car parks leads to people having to use the Pritchatts Road multistorey which doesn't have a lift. You only need a minor leg or back injury and much of the parking is now potentially out of your reach.

The parking problem has become unbearable since the beginning of the semester. I have to bring my children to school on some of the days. Today, I arrived at 9.22 at the multi-story carpark and it was packed. No other place to find either. Why is the car park next to the hockey pitches not opened yet? It seems to be ready. I wrote to the car parking email today being told that there will be a multi-story car park in the future. But when??? We need this now!!!

I'm all in favour of alternatives to cars, but the university needs to be doing more to assist staff with alternatives. Failing that, they need to address the reality that cars remain important for many staff.

I hardly ever use the car to work. If I do, it is usually to pick someone up, or to something in that I need for work. If I park in front of the building where I work I risk a £60 ticket or have to buy an expensive pass. I find this whole procedure very unfriendly.

But there are much staff-friendlier options.

The problem of parking needs to be addressed. Too many parking spaces have been taken out in the last year so we are really struggling to find any parking spaces.

This is another reflection of the leadership issues at UoB. Excessive building work everywhere, a 'transformation' of the campus, but far from sufficient parking spaces which I would regard as an absolute necessity. Simply forgotten to be planned in? Not regarded as important enough? Well, as long as senior management have their designated spaces right in front of Aston Webb, who cares about how the others get to work and where to park.......

The parking situation particularly affects those who have to travel further and therefore might be thought to be most in need of parking

Flexible working us great except that it impossible. If you don't get to work early you will not be able to park.

Impossible to find a parking space after 8:15 a.m.

With child care commitments it is not possible for me to get onto campus before 8:45, by which point it is often already not possible to find a parking space. So many places now hashed off or taken by skips or white vans. Being stuck in a traffic jam on the way in for just 5 minutes makes all the difference. With child care and caring commitments, public transport or getting to campus earlier is just not an option. This has now become a major source of daily stress especially when due to give a 9am lecture and nowhere to park.

Why wasn't a lift put in the North East Car Park? Also, I can't help but notice that the senior managers all have reserved parking spaces, located very conveniently close to their own offices. I wish I was a senior manager...

The university keeps on building new buildings and increasing the class sizes, but do not seem to be aware that parking spaces needs to increase proportionally. It would be interesting to put in a Freedom of Information to know how the parking fines have spiked up since the new buildings have been built.

Lack of car parking spaces caused by double yellow lines painted where parking could easily be accommodated, Hills car park and other areas restricted to certain users but invariably spaces are still available, contractors parking, spaces reserved by schools for visitors. Lots of areas which could accommodate parking such as an extension to the existing parking area at rear of Student Hub on grassed area. The University needs to be more car friendly.

For staff living any distance from the University the numerous roadworks around Birmingham have made getting to work before 8:30 almost impossible. Then finding nowhere to park is doubly galling.

If you have to leave campus anytime after 9am for an external meeting or doctor appointment, there is absolutely nowhere to park upon return. Staff pay £1 a day already to park and to not be able to get here on time as no parking spaces is ridiculous.

I am still angry that I had to pay a £30 parking fine for parking on grass because that was the only place available after getting to work for 09.00 after an early start on caring duties. I then spent 14 hours at work!

Not only is the lack of parking making it difficult for people with care responsibilities to park, it is embarrassing to invite visitors on to campus when they cannot park. Public transport is not always an option. This morning I helped a woman carry a baby buggy from the 5th floor to the ground floor of the NE car park: I don't think it is acceptable to have a relatively new facility with no lift.

I work in the Aston Webb Building and I now leave my house every morning at 6.50am so I can get a parking space for 8.00am. I have also noticed that people using the Sports Centre first thing in the morning are using parking spaces at the back of Aston Webb instead of paying for Sports Centre car park. I understand staff from all over the Uni can use any parking space if they have a badge but I have seen people parking there with no badge at all. Hills car park is out of bounds for Academic Services, if staff could have access to that at least it would be a huge help.
