University of Birmingham car parking

We definitely need more parking spaces on campus as no alternative car parking available outside the campus.

Pritchatts Road Car Park has become more difficult to find parking after 8.45am. Adding another multi-storey should be considered as an option.

Grrrr. Not paid enough to spend an hour circling for a space and then having to park a mile away and running to give lecture.

I always arrive at 8:30am and struggle to find a parking space. The situation is only going to get worse too! I cannot physically leave any earlier, due to childcare commitments in the morning.... and arriving at work at 8:30am is hardly late anyway... there should be parking at that hour!

I come at 7:30, pay £1, leave at 12:15 to come back at 13:30 - just to find no parking place. And then after driving for 30+ minutes, either go back home or pay a parking ticket! The experience is frustrating.

Parking is insufficient and has got worse. This needs to be addressed as significantly affects staff motivation and may impact retention.

I'm lucky as I get to work for 7.30 but I hear every day from my colleagues who have problems - so much so that after driving around for over half an hour they end up having to work from home as there is absolutely nowhere for them to park.

Some numbers: The Estates intranet page sets out details of the parking distruptions: https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/estates/Car-Parking-Disruptions/index.aspx The interactive maps show around 500 spaces have been lost (300 permanently, 200 temporarily) in recent months. To counter that, about 100 permanent spaces will soon be available near Bournbrook pitches and a further 300-400 temporary spaces around Munrow and the CTL - but only until July 2018 when Munrow gets covered. This raises serious questions: - Why were old spaces taken out of service before new spaces were available? - What will happen after July 2018 when we lose Munrow? The Intranet page also mentions, "Plans are currently underway to reinstate a more efficient multi-storey car parking provision of approximately 490 spaces to replace surface-level parking lost due to new projects. This will be located on the west side of campus in a location that is conducive to the overall sense of arrival and in a reasonable walking distance to the campus centre." That seems very vague and early in the planning stages for a solution that simply needs to be in place for July 2018. Currently our "overall sense of arrival" is one of stress, frustration and delay - but at least we can admire the architecture while sitting in a car trying to connect to Wi-Fi.

How about letting some staff park on the lawn at the Business School until the problem is fixed?

I take the train most days, but sometimes this isn't an option. I tend to drive on a Friday and if you're not here by 8.30 it takes ages to find anywhere to park. This is particularly bad when i was working in two locations and returning to the university part way through the day. With car parks that are currently full due to be closed, i'll have little hope of finding somewhere to go.

If I arrive after 8.45 am it is a nightmare to find a space

I actually use public transport but I have noticed this year in particular colleagues really struggling. Working in Beech House, first the majority of University spaces outside Ash were taken up with contractors working on the conversion of Ash House and also those from the gym site. This improved briefly with the completion of these projects but since the new term many of the spaces have been taken by gym users who don't want to pay for the gym parking (this is unambiguous as you seem them walk to and from the gym with their equipment and kit), and also those who haven't been able to park elsewhere. I've noticed a massive increase in staff here unable to get a space when arriving at a normal time (some have children, some do not, that is not the point). At least two colleagues within a desk of me arrived in the office today well after 9.30 as unable to find a space - one had only been able to park over a mile away and walk here (presumably that won't be safe later when she has to walk back there in the dark). Based on what I regularly hear around the office this is not at all unusual. I know the number of parking spaces the university is allowed to have is limited by the council but they seem to have willingly created a current shortage far below this number due to very poor co-ordination of timing of the many building projects around campus. Also, the lack of lifts in new multi-storey(s) is shocking. Finally, yes there are some good new deals on the local buses, yes there are some incentives for public transport, cycling, lift sharing etc. but it is not enough (and however good the cycle parking provision is on campus, the local area is tragically, demonstrably, not safe enough for cyclists). I stopped getting the train 4 years ago because the local trains are so bad that even London Midland themselves sent unsolicited apologies at the time. The parking situation is so dire that it has led to people squeezing into areas that aren't even designated spaces, and even resorting to blocking people in. I have on too many occasions returned to my car after work, finding that it has been blocked in by someone who clearly couldn't find parking elsewhere (this is a specific problem in the Vincent Drive car park)! More space needs to be allocated to car parking, especially with the continued planned expansion of the University - this means more staff and more students, this problem will only get worse if not addressed!

It is very difficult if arriving between 8.45-9. If a member of the gym, but also staff, the multi storey carpark is not free for us, however University parking is not always easy to find close to the gym either.

This is a joke. We come to work and give our all to the business with out any recognition, We are on low pay and we expected to pay for parking and we cant find any spaces. If there is going to be less spaces then can you refund our parking fees or reduce it.

I have had to completely reschedule my mornings to ensure I can get to work before 8:30am to get a car park space. Some mornings I have driven for 10 minutes to find a space, and then had a 10 minute walk. I feel this is unacceptable for a paid service.

Car parking should be a priority for staff. Especially when we are charged for parking - Students should not be given any access to car parking facilities. There is too much emphasis on the student experience, when without the hardworking staff of UoB there wouldn't be any here! Reputation before well being!!

Due to the contractors in recent years taking half the spaces over in Beech House and more recently the gym users the car parking situation has got significantly worse.
