Pre-Covid, our education system as we know it has been unable to address the inequities we continue to theorize about. Let's not apply an old framing to this time of global pandemic for the sake of returning to a normal that didn't work in the first place. Let's use this time to imagine something radically different!

Proud to sign this. This is the least we can do to our students who cannot outrun the chilling shadow of capitalism in any area of their lives during this unprecedented pandemic… at the very least, we can liberate students and teachers from the hamster wheel of grades and grading and “demonstrative productivity” during the biggest global health crisis in a century!

I want to be available and work with my students who can get online, but I do not want to be forced to give them a letter grade in this context. Many of the students who have been able to respond to me (41 out of 170 of my students), are in crowded households with limited resources, are now working more hours to help support the family, are working to provide childcare to younger siblings, and/or sick relatives.
