We, the undersigned UJ academics, noting the freeze on student fee increases and endorsing the ideal of affordable education for all, recommit ourselves to excellent higher education in South Africa. We now expect government to provide proper resources to prevent a decline in the quality of education and conditions of academic and other staff, and therefore insist that the state should cover the cost of the freeze. We reject suggestions that any university should be expected to implement austerity measures to cover their present shortfalls, and instead challenge the government to dramatically strengthen investment in our educational sector in general. We call for the convening of emergency meetings of faculty boards, Senate and unions.

I agree. Why do we always have to suffer because of others decisions that they make. We are already not receiving an increase that is in sink with inflation but we do not strike. I humbly asked please look at matters from our point as well we work very hard.

Totally agree! UJ also needs to improve on the conditions of employment of part-time lecturers. Why not appoint us on 2 - 3 year contracts? Why appoint us for 6 months at a time even though most of us have worked for the same department(s) for 3 years (or longer)?

I support this, although I'd also like to see UJ trim its own fat. I'm concerned about money spent on food at meetings, and money spent on overseas engagements and retreats by senior managers. And I have little clue what's spent on sports, etc. Finally, all the performance management bonuses should go to student fees, or to hiring more staff.

I fully support this move. The provision of affordable education should not compromise its quality.

The call for government to cover the cost of the freeze is a strong one -- as long as government does not use this intervention as a way of compromising freedom of thought, association and action in the universities

Government, university management, and students should always remember that age-old economic truth: you get what you pay for.
