We, the University of Illinois students, faculty, and staff, firmly oppose the recent layoffs and position eliminations that have impacted over 90 employees. UIC has already cut nearly 400 employees since the fall. This spring, the governor announced that the percentage cut from UIC’s budget in the fall was being restored -- there’s no reason for the cuts to be happening now.
The University of Illinois cannot succeed without the expertise of our world-renowned faculty, nor can we thrive without indispensable support of our clerical and administrative staff since they provide services that are likewise essential to our education. Secretaries, building service workers and customer service representatives – each have a role to play in making UIC run.
We the undersigned students, faculty, and staff, call on Chancellor Allen-Meares to reverse these recent cuts immediately.
I have been reading your comments and it is clear that many people feel the same confusion over these illogical cuts. This has grown into something far beyond what I imagined at the start and I am truly humbled by how many of you stepped up to protect our coworkers.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you have stepped up to support our colleagues since this started. If you could send the link to a few coworkers or friends today we might reach our first goal together. This momentum belongs entirely to you.

Seeing the count climb toward 250 signatures leaves me honestly stunned by your dedication to our coworkers. Please keep this energy moving forward because the administration is watching these numbers very closely today.

UIC needs to get its act together. You cant just keep slashing jobs when the funding is coming back. Total incompetence by admin.

My office would fall apart without the staff. They work so hard and deserve to keep their jobs.

This is ridiculous. Those buildings wont stay clean or organized on their own. Stop firing the people who actually keep this place running.

How are we supposed to thrive as students when the support staff is being treated like they dont matter. Fix this now.
