Petition to Save the International Center at UCSD

My parents and I moved here in the early 70's, even then, I remember the International Center as a place of cultural diversity. Throughout the years of growing up here and eventually working at UCSD, the International Center, tucked away in the groves, has been a hub for international visitors. I have hosted many international visitors touring the university and SIO who marveled at such a beautiful and historic structure, I was proud of the International Center and its significance. It would be a loss to the community, the visitors and myself if this gem was taken away from us. Please leave it where it belongs.

Please, suspend the demolition plans.

We need to know how the demolition of the International Center with no plans to reconstitute it fits into the master plan--how does this benefit the University? Further how does it generate community involvement and quality of campus life to do away with something that has a proven track record?

The International Center is an important resource for our community, especially as we have so many international students who benefit from it.

A cohesive International Center with a central location is vital to the UC San Diego community.

With such a large number of international students at UCSD, I believe it is important to have a meeting place for friendships to develop, collaborations begin, ideas exchanged--a home away from home. Please keep the center open to all.

I've benefited numerous times from this center's services. It's an integral part of the UCSD community.

A well-integrated International Center is very much needed. The sooner, the better, to continue with its necessary and valuable functions.

I was a student in the mid 70's. My parents hosted quite a few international students in their home. The students found the International Center a great comfort, source of information and connections and a fun place to meet other students from the US and around the world. Please do not tear down the International Center.

Lots of good memories here. Shopping in the thrift store and meeting with an advisor many times so that I could study abroad. It's nice to have all of that international center/study abroad in one place!

INEXCUSABLE THAT A MAJOR RESEARCH UNIVERSITY IS SO CALLOUS AS TO IGNORE THE REPERCUSSION LACK OF A COHESIVE INTERNATIONAL CENTER WILL HAVE ON ITS INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION. WILLFUL IGNORANCE - THESE FOREIGNERS PAY A LOT BUT WE DON'T NEED TO SHOW RESPECT. YOU WOULD NOT DARE SLAP A MINORITY GROUP IN THE FACE THIS WAY. SHAME ON YOU.

The Friends of the international center was such a wonderful concept, mommy and me helped my toddler and likewise the staff were friendly and the international center has been a very useful resource, providing necessary information and helping the international scholars visiting UCSD to feel at home away from home.

So many wonderful activities take place at the center. English in action tutoring, international café, mommy and me luncheon for foreign students. Please reconsider tearing it down.

International Lunches there are awesome.

I've worked as the psychologist counselor for the international students during my career at UCSD. The Center has been a wonderful meeting place for the community. We must keep it.

The International Center provides foreign students with a supportive environment, helps them to perfect their English, and brings together many contributors to scholarships for them. It makes a major contribution to the the diversity of the campus.

Save the Center!!!

The University need a central point for international activities and for community involvement.

Not only is the International Center a valuable welcome part of community life for students from abroad, it gives local students and volunteers a chance to help create friendship and understanding among people from other cultures and belief systems.
