Dear Modesto City Council Members:
As you work to update the City’s General Plan, we urge you to make the health of the Tuolumne River a top priority. The Tuolumne is a vital resource for our community, providing drinking water, recreational opportunities and critical habitat for fish and wildlife. The Tuolumne should be treated as a central, inviting feature of Modesto, like rivers are for other great cities.
We encourage you to work closely with the Irrigation Districts, the Sustainable Groundwater Agencies, conservation organizations and other stakeholders to develop a plan to capture potential floodwater and store it in our groundwater basin for the benefit of people, farms and the Tuolumne River ecosystem.

The Modesto City Council is still ignoring the obvious benefits of protecting our river while they drag their feet on the General Plan. I am tired of seeing our water resources treated like an afterthought by bureaucrats who refuse to prioritize our community over corporate interests. We are forcing this conversation into the open regardless of whether they want to listen.

The Modesto City Council can no longer pretend the Tuolumne River does not matter to this community. This momentum proves that people are tired of seeing our water resources neglected while the politicians drag their feet.

The Tuolumne River is a source of life for Modesto. Not only is it a valuable water resource that should be handled with in the utmost care but, it is also a source of recreation that can ultimately attract local residents and visitors as well. My family loves biking along the waterway and would love to see the river cared for and developed so more of our county can take advantage of the Tuolumne water way.
Our community deserves clean, safe, and well-developed river parks for recreation and to protect the riparian corridor through Modesto. We need more active, positive uses for our parks, creek, and river and to push back on all forms of blight and damage to these critically vital parts of both our community and the environment.
The Tuolumne River is the life blood of Modesto. It is a riparian corridor that hosts a variety of plants and animals. It provides a nature sanctuary for those who enjoy walking, hiking, birding and riding. We need to appreciate and protect it.
We need stronger environmental protections for our waterways. The Tuolumne River is a valuable resource and has been greatly impacted by human activity that has created an unhealthy waterway for wildlife and people. Let’s make it a priority to clean it up so the river can be restored to a productive habitat.
And please remember that scientists agree the fastest and cheapest way to refill the groundwater table and clean the pollution out of the drinking water from wells is: use floodplains to recharge the groundwater tables. Dams and reservoirs are not cheap, nor are they fast to construct.
The Tuolumne River is a jewel to be protected and preserved.
We really need to care about this place we all share.

Total number of cleanups conducted: 96 Total number of volunteers participating: 5191 Total tons of garbage/material removed: 664 Total number of shopping carts removed: 1420 Total number of tires removed: 1893 Hypodermic needles recycled/removed: 2900 Batteries recycled/removed: 4000 (110 Pounds)
