Served on the board 2011-14. Proposed expanding it then. So, yes I would support it.
There is really no good reason NOT to do this since there is usually quite a bit of work involved and sharing the load across 7 (or even 9 as in Eastchester district) would be helpful.
It needs to be put on the ballot so obviously a majority of the board would need to want to do this. Back then I don't think I had another member in agreement to do this nor was the Supt. warm to the idea either.
Other comments I've read suggested you couldn't get enough (qualified) people to serve -- and if that's the (sad) case then perhaps they should consider merging with Eastchester.

The current structure has resulted in complete dysfunction. I agree we need a 7 member board. Perhaps then there will be more accountability to the public.

As an alum of Tuckahoe Middle and High School, I am no stranger to the instability and dysfunction within the current BOE structure. Increase the size and let more people be heard!

The same could be said for those who want more members. Is it because this board makes decisions based on the effects of the entire school community and not individuals as in the past?

I think this is a great idea. The current make up of the board has lost the confidence of the community and seems out of touch. I think the board needs more “Village” representation

Susan all of your points are entirely valid and would be important as part of a robust, collaborative and public forum. The exercise of reviewing our district governance to ensure it meets the needs of our diverse population is one that would be worthwhile to have in an open setting. Perhaps the end result of engaging the public in the dialogue will in fact foster the informed, engaged and involved electorate that is essential to the education of our children. All we are looking for is the open discussion and contemplation of what is best for all stakeholders.

Well said- agreed. Thank you Susan. The community first needs to attend BOE mtgs in order to be informed / have their concerns heard.

Careful what you wish for. Voting is the only way we have to choose NOT to elect a candidate; if we have more vacancies than candidates, that means that we're FORCED to accept people who might not be good for the Board. Worse, they could be detrimental. What's to stop a crazy person from being elected? A corrupt person? A flake? We need to be able to CHOOSE Board members, not be forced into tolerance because of a quota. A vote will soon become meaningless. Most people I talk to don't even follow what's going on with the Board; how can we hope to pull out of a hat that many people who are: a) qualified; b) available for a 3-year commitment; c) dedicated to the best interest of all constituents; d) willing to devote countless hours; e) willing to get yelled at by their friends and neighbors? I agree that a 7-person board sounds good on paper, but I think our community is not ready for this step and we should fear the inability to reject candidates. I think a better solution would be to have the Board empower committees that could allow for a large # of voices for specific purposes, but to expand the Board indefinitely scares me.

Thank you for your thoughtful and valuable feedback. The purpose is to engage the community and see if they feel best served by the existing structure. If there is public support to explore the issue, it will be brought to the BOE and your valid questions and concerns would be part of research, extensive public dialogue and a public vote. All discussion would be public and transparent so voters could make an informed decision. Thank you for contributing to the discussion which will hopefully be continued.
We cannot continue down the path we are on!!
