My housemate and I walked on the ice for 50 minutes to get to campus from Illinois St, just so we could make it to class. We walked at our own risk and discretion, yes, but we did so because we can’t afford to fall behind in courses here at Truman. We both fell on our way, and witnessed the trash truck and other vehicles slide all over the road. It was completely unsafe. The Truman sidewalks hadn’t even been salted yet when we got to campus. If students are expected to go to class, and the earliest scheduled classes for that day begin at 7:30, then the campus sidewalks should be salted well beforehand.

Agreed! Sometimes they do not put any salt on the sidewalk until later in the afternoon, I have morning classes! I commute and driving when it is icy is so dangerous. You hear all about wrecks from ice but school is still in session so you have to try to get there anyway.

I went to class and had to CRAWL up a hill to get to the building. I watched sheets of ice fall doen by doors. When I was in class, I was taught information that is vital for my education and next exam. If I had missed class, I would have missed an important topic. I should not have to risk my life to get to class so I can pass a test. I used my judgement to go to class so I do not mess up my semester when I would have rather prioritized my saftey. It is unacceptable for a university to not take some course of action to help the health of students.

This morning it took 30 minutes to get the thick layer of ice off of my car. The roads were still slick and people were having difficulty stoping or turning. Once I was finally on campus, it was like an ice rink. This isn't just a safety issue for students, it's a safety issue for all faculty and those employed by the university. Students shouldn't fear the risk of falling behind in class because of the dangerous weather. Faculty shouldn't fear driving off the road because they have to get to work when it's this icy. It's not safe.

Telling students and faculty to “use their own judgment about safety” is an absolute avoidance of responsibility. Canceling classes for the safety of the entire Truman community vastly outweighs the costs of being one day behind.

Refusing to call a necessary ice day to prove a point endangers students. Students are not being dramatic; this has been an ongoing issue at Truman State for years.

I am a commuter. Even though my professors are understanding of inclement weather situations, I still lose points for not being in class which I think is a little unfair.
