Keep it alive

Very valid arguments! What a waist of investment and good data when TROPOMI would be shut down. Be smart, EU.

TROPOMI is creating high quality data which enables lots of scientific progress. Discontinuing such a successful mission is very short sighted.

The combination of both S5-AM in the morning, and Tropomi/S5-PM in the afternoon is essential for understanding the dynamic behaviour of our atmosphere. It is also critical to have both to use S4 in context.

Indeed stopping is a big waste of investment.

Keep both, its essential!

TROPOMI/S5-PM afternoon plus S5-AM provides rich complementary level of understanding for air quality, climate & increasingly geopolitically important goals!

I agree with all the reasons stated here. In addition, S5p and S5 are serving as important LEO observations to cross calibrate observations from the Geostationary Air Quality constellation and provide morning/afternoon observations with similar spatial resolution in the other parts of the world without GEO AQ observations.

Tropomi has been as close to flawless as a remote sensing mission can be, and the instrument is still producing high-quality data. Maximizing the overlap with Sentinel 5 is obviously a good idea, and, in the grand scheme of things, an absolute bargain. Keep the data flowing!

Never change a winning team

Continuing S5p mission is great value at low delta cost. Let’s be smart about it!

I fully agree with the points in this petition.

The decommissioning of S5P would entail substantial harm to our international relations during an already fragile geopolitical period.

TROPOMI instrument has been hugely successful in getting timely methane measurements and keeping a tab on the green house gases being released around the world. It would be extremely important to keep this mission going for the benefit of the whole world.

Let the New mission proof itsself before decommissioning the New one

Tropomi satellite is the key changer for atmosphere research

The data from TROPOMI provides information critical to understanding atmospheric chemistry and its impact on us and our planet. It is widely used, and its unnecessary loss would have a serious impact on the value of the science it supports.

Discontinuing TROPOMI, a healthy, well-characterized, and exceptionally high-quality instrument, would be a serious loss for long-term records of air quality and volcanic activity. This is especially true as a complementary data set becomes available to assess diurnal changes.

I worked with TROPOMI data 5 years ago that has underpinned recommendations to oil & gas companies to manage large methane leaks. This is really important data that needs overlap with any new satellite data before retiring.

TROPOMI is by far the most successful methane monitoring instrument in history. It is the work horse of our community and has taken years to get the data quality to be sufficient for this purpose. Sentinel 5 is not a copy and will take a very long time to make useful methane retrievals for the community and planet.
