The early afternoon orbit of S-5p helps to study the diurnal variability of trace gases together with other missions (e.g., of overpass times of satellites measuring methane are: Sentinel-5 at ~09:30 LT, MicroCarb at ~10:30 LT, CO2M planned at ~11:30 LT, Merlin planned at ~06:00 and ~18:00 LT, …) and is an essential reference for other missions (Tip and Cue) dedicated to the detection of point and distributed emission sources.

TROPOMI is critical for monitoring air quality. While S5 provides complimentary information it cannot replace S5P. The loss of S5P TROPOMI would be a huge loss for our ability to monitor our home planet.

TROPOMI continues to provide essential data and is not redundant with Sentinel 5. In addition, we will be losing the NASA EOS missions in the next few years with a significant impact on data assimilation systems for global chemical transport prediction.

The launch of sentinel-5 does not negate the need for TROPOMI. Without a multi year overlap, there is no way to cross check the measurements. It would break the continuity of a long term dataset which cannot be retroactively repaired.
