The purpose of this petition is to request that the President of Northern Illinois University, Doug Baker, release a statement addressing the rescinding of the May 13, 2016 "Dear Colleague" letter by President Donald Trump. The "Dear Colleague" letter was written by the Department of Education under the Obama administration. It clarifies that transgender students are protected from discrimination under Title IX. We the undersigned believe that President Baker should affirm the equal protection of transgender students from identity-based discrimination at Northern Illinois University, and that transgender students should be included in the university's future decision-making processes on matters that affect their lives in an effort to bridge the divide between the administration and transgender students.

All of our students deserve safe and respectful space. NIU must take a stand to protect our Trans students and educate our community about important issues related to our trans colleagues and students. It's on us.

I know that I will never fully understand the struggles of the trans community, as I am not a transgender individual. For that reason, I feel it is incredibly important for the people of the transgender community to have a say in NIU's decisions regarding transgender students. NIU's decisions should take all voices into consideration, especially those who are most affected. I support the trans community.

We need to do the right thing, and be loving to those who are struggling. This means reaching our hands out to help and support, to show that we care. This means being conscious of our words, and speaking from a place of kindness and compassion, even if we don't understand. This means being sure to include those who feel excluded. This means listening to others, and believing them.
