As a Finance Manager to the Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op, it concerns me that if the NDC plan approved, we will get out of business. Which I think someone with conscious mind doesn’t like that to happen. I still have hoped the city will evaluate all the proposed alternates. Our Coop is structured by few neighbor members’ contribution and the membership has grown to 10,000 at this time. On top of being employer to 50 employees with best benefit, our Coop also pays back to the community by supplying healthy food and giving donations to different organizations. It also generates 10 million gross sales at this moment. If the city considers the Coop to expand, we would grow faster and would be good source of revenue for The City of Takoma Park and the State at large.

I think the time has come for adult supervision of this project. I think we need a member of Council to step up, or for Council to appoint another member of the community who is experienced in dealing with contractors, to manage this project. We are being rolled by NDC and their "bait and switch tactics." Our community values are more important that NDC's bottom line.

Current illustrations are widely out of scale, misrepresenting the size of the proposed building, the width of the roadway and traffic patterns. This design is a recipe for disaster.

The open space at the Junction is a great opportunity for development, but it needs to take into account the needs of the community: public space that's actually functional, inviting, and community-building, an appropriately-sized elevation, and a plan for parking that accounts for rush hour backups on Ethan Allen and Carroll as well as functional loading areas for delivery trucks to the Co-op and other retailers in the new space. The current plan will clog traffic at the Junction and does not offer an inviting community gathering space - it's a wasted opportunity.

I am not saying "no" to all development, I'd love to have some fun shops and such at the Junction. But please, City Council, stop and take a breath: This has been a long process but barreling forward with a plan that jeopardizes what the community wants--reasonable and right-sized development-- for what amounts to developer profit would threaten the fabric of our community. Think carefully, with open minds, and take some time to consider alternatives that hew more closely to what the city asked for in the first place.

I've seen some of the presentations at the City Council meetings, especially last Wednesday night (Apr 18th)--and it is apparent that the developers really do not understand our community. Their design would radically change what we cherish for this part of Takoma Park. What is needed is change that would make the Junction and all of Old Town more inviting and welcoming for all Takoma Park residents, not just a narrow few. The people of TP should not wait for the CC to decide. This should be a decision of the people. In the tradition of Sam Abbot, we can stop the bulldozers. Most of us are working people and we cannot let the bosses push us around.

As a worker-member of the co-op and member of the TPSS Workers Union, I would like echo the concerns of the community and demand that county council vote no on this plan and develop this property in a way that payd dividends to the community as a whole, not just developers, property owners, and wealthy residents. The livlihood of almost 50 workers at the co-op depend on its success. The Co-op has gone thru many transitions lately and I believe its best days are ahead as long as our efforts aren't thwarted by what seems to be reckless and hasty plans that will serve the capitalists more than the community in the long run. I support more green space, community events, farmers markets and even co-op expansion into this space in order to meet the needs of the community. The co-op is becoming, thanks to the Union, an excellent place to work, with great benefits, and if bargaining goes well, competitive wages, not to mention a collective voice for the workers who need one to navigate every day issues on the shopfloor. If this development is to go ahead as planned it will restrict the co-op from expanding in the future and its ability to offer a great union job to more workers. Lets support what already exists.

this plan does not support local business, jeopardizes the Coop, prioritizes trucks over pedestrians and outdoor space, presents a nightmare traffic scenario (including concerns for rescue vehicles), etc! In short, it simply does not meet the needs, of the Takoma Park community. Who is pushing this forward and making this decision when it is likely opposed by the majority of Takoma Park citizens?
