Tougher E-Scooter Safety Laws for Washington DC

Most of them don't even know how to ride them. They need licenses.

Really? These scooters need RULES. And we don't need MORE of them on the streets.

Please! Before we all get run over!

I do feel, however, that scooters should be treated like bicycles, in other words, they are not cars. I have seen some scooter riders driving as if they were a car and holding up the regular flow of traffic.

These things are a menace.. ban them!

There should also be a limit of one person per scooter and a prohibition on strapping packages to the scooter or hanging grocery bags from the handles. Blinking lights should be required on the front and back of each scooter. Why are the rights of pedestrians so far down in the pecking order??? Walking remains the most non-polluting method of transportation. Scooters are "parked" and abandoned at busy corners, leaning against mailboxes, dumped at bus stops (ever see someone step out of a bus and trip on a scooter lying on the sidewalk?), on pedestrian bridges, in planters, etc. Why would the D.C. Government release this two-wheeled plague on the city without any plan for safety and regulation???

I fully support the penalties and incentives mentioned.

Dumped/abandoned scooters are eyesores and dangerous to motorists, pedestrians and each other. I have been hit by two of them so far on the sidewalk.

This has to be regulated and no sidewalks please. My dog and I are dodging it the time.

These scooters parked across sidewalks with as many as three BLOCKING foot path presents quite a problem for me. I have tripped over them and fallen as a result! I should not have to clear the path in order to walk on it SCOOTERS should not be parked on sidewalks! Park them in the street where all moving vehicles are parked. Georgetown sidewalks were not designed to accommodate scooters and PEOPLE!

While I support more energy efficient transportation these need to be regulated on a way so that they are not being used on sidewalks. I’ve seen and experienced individuals who almost run me over, my dog over, and then drop them in the middle of a sidewalk. We should be thinking about those who are trying to use the sidewalk and are unable to move these obstacles in their way. If city bikes have docking stations it would be reasonable to also require that of scooters.

I can’t stand scooters and will do everything I can to support the drastic reduction of them in DC

This is very much needed. I walk at night and am sick of scooters blocking the sidewalk in dark areas of the neighborhood.

I know the genie's out of the bottle but at least regulate these things please

They are a pestilence

I walk to/from work every day. I have had many close calls due to sidewalk scooter users. I am a DC taxpayer & am tired of the lack of attn by the Mayor & theCity Council to residents’ safety. Some action must be taken.

Our City Council must oversee what DDOT is doing on this issue. And our Office of Attorney General needs to investigate the sweetheart deals established by DDOT with the scooter and bike-share companies, with a special eye toward the liability insurance these companies are required to have before doing business in DC.

Especially dangerous to sight impaired individuals and seeing eye dogs.
