To: Cllr Tony Page, Reading Borough Council, cc Cllr Jo Lovelock, Leader, Reading Borough Council

We, the undersigned, call on you, Tony Page, to resign from your position as Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member with executive responsibility for Planning and Transport.

The grounds for this call are many, but here are three:-

1. Tony Page has repeatedly and deliberately misled the public over the disastrous Shinfield Road traffic lights scheme which he signed off. Works started in April 2010 when he was Executive Member for Transport, but he repeatedly claims the decision was taken by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat administration that only took office in May.

2. Tony Page has reinforced a ban on disabled people accessing much of Reading Town Centre for seven hours a day. He refused to reconsider the imposition of a ban on access to Blue Badge holders to roads such as Friar Street - a scheme not notified to disabled people and Reading Borough Council's Access Forum in advance, and which has resulted in numerous complaints.

3. Tony Page is the architect of the destruction of an integrated transport interchange around Reading Station. As Executive Member he signed off the closure of Station Hill to through traffic and the sale of part of the highway to developers. The plans were implemented before a planning brief for the area was put in place. He works as a freelance lobbyist and has as yet not disclosed who he works for.

Updates

September 6, 2020

im still getting emails every day about how these transport decisions are making life impossible for people in town. im currently logging all the stories people are sending me so we have a solid record to show the council when we finally get a meeting.

September 6, 2020

im honestly blown away by how much this has grown. the momentum is real and it shows that people in reading are finally fed up with being ignored.

Not fit for purpose, roads in Reading and Caversham especially are constantly at gridlock due to RBC and Highways incompetence, and they have the nerve to preach about pollution whilst causing the worst kind with all these gridlocks. Encouraging cycling but not providing the connecting cycle lanes to make this possible, consequently cyclist break the law by cycling on pavements to the detriment of us poor pedestrians. Why is this allowed to continue!!!

Tony Page is an absolute joke and should do the decent thing and resign. I tried to approach him a couple of years ago regarding the state of one of the towns car parks and he did everything he could do to avoid me and no address the problem. Thinks he is above it all. An absolute waste of time. Bring in someone who is capable of doing a decent job.

The ridiculous MRT idea and the millions wasted on it should’ve been enough. Now Caversham’s one way system, time to go Tony.

He has been economical with the truth re "rat running" as those "named and shamed" have no alternative choice

I would agree Tony does not do well for the Reading community and have noticed he does not support arts/lifestyle/culture in the town at all. There were so many possibilities with Reading HMP that could've boosted the economy and arts culture of Reading moving forwards and he did nothing other than opening it as a museum. Time for a fresh pair of eyes and ears on the town's scene for the right reasons.
