A massive egg recall by Write County Egg has sickened hundreds of people, and affected 13 retail brands that the egg factory packages. The culprit: Salmonella on egg shells.... ...Bacterial contamination on modern industrial-scale chicken farms (factories, really) is a growing problem. Cramped conditions are breeding grounds for disease. Widespread use of antibiotics is creating drug-resistant strains of bacteria....

We, the citizens of the The Town of North Hempstead, petition the town to change By-law § 70-203. Public health, safety and general welfare. which states:

 E. No accessory building or structure or part thereof used for the housing of fowl or domestic animals, other than dogs or cats, shall be less than 50 feet from any property line. All existing buildings or structures not in conformity with the provisions of this section shall, within two years from the adoption of this local law, be removed or be relocated to conform to this section.

In NYC, Chickens are considered pets under the Health Code. Unlimited number of hens allowed; no roosters or other types of poultry. Basically this change would allow residential occupants to keep chickens as pets for the purpose of laying eggs. We propose that the code be amended to accept a maximum of 4-6 laying hens/chickens (no roosters).  Chickens must be enclosed (no free roaming). - minimum of 20 feet from any dwelling and 10 feet from lot line (as opposed to 50 feet!!) The purpose of housing these pets would be for personal use:  eggs for food.  This law change would bring the Town of North Hempstead into line with cities such as New York, Chicago and Vancouver and allow residents to share in the joy of producing healthy food from their own backyard.

Updates

March 16, 2011

The industrial egg situation is only getting worse. This is exactly why we need our own local source for healthy food.

March 16, 2011

The momentum is undeniable now. North Hempstead is ready for local eggs.

Everyone should be allowed to raise their own hens. Fresh eggs taste better and my kids would love learning how to care for them. North Hempstead needs to update these old rules.
