It is apparent that Hello My Friend Cafe has had a positive impact on the quality of education that law students experience at the University of Alberta. And, Steve has clearly played a vital and meaningful role in the University's law community. I support this petition to oppose removal of Hello My Friend Cafe.

I was there in 2006 when Steve went solo and left Java Jive. Visiting him was more than just coffee, he was kind, generous and always positive. He lifted my spirits on some of my hardest days while I was working toward my BFA. In a highly impersonal world, people like Steve give me faith in humanity. I find it utterly sad this man is going to loose something he's worked so hard to accomplish. 'Hello My Friend Cafe' isn't just a place to grab coffee... it's a sanctuary from the craziness that university often demands.

Steve is one of the kindest people I met in my time at the U of A. He was so supportive and it was alway such a pleasure. If the U of A truly wants to create a community, and not a souless corportate hole, then they should be supporting Steve and his cafe. He puts customer service first, and after years of building up his business deserves better treatment!

Steve welcomed me into the law School and offered me a coffee when I was standing in the hall waiting to go into an award ceremony. He had no reason to be so welcoming but made me feel comfortable in a place that I was unfamiliar with and had never been before. He is obviously a very special person to many people.

Steve was so kind and supportive to our BFA Acting class. He would come to our performances and often ask what was up next for us. He first introduced me to Highlander Grogg (a type of coffee) - by offering it to me for free to try. This man has an amazing heart, and does much, much more than just run a cafe. When Steve says "Hello my friend" - he means it. Please do not remove this cafe.

Signed by a BFA Theatre Design 2007 grad who frequented Steve's café during breaks. It was the highlight of the day to be greeted by Steve and enjoy a warm conversation while sipping a freshly brewed coffee.

Steve means quite a lot to law students and the faculty as a whole. That should be clear to anyone who spends a significant amount of time in the law building. That this was done with so little notice to Steve and zero consultation with students is unacceptable. I understand this was likely a business decision; the rumoured Starbucks I'm sure would bring in more rent. But this faculty isn't a business, or at least shouldn't be. I can tell you as a recent graduate that I am very dissatisfied with the lack of student consultation and thought for the best interests of students that seems to underscore the decisions made for the faculty this year. Do the right thing and renew Steve's lease. The university may find that if it continues to make decisions like this, the extra rent for this repurposed space will evaporate from a lack of alumni donations.

Steve makes everyone feel welcome. Even those students not in law who are looking for a welcoming place to grab coffee. Steve was very nice to my friend and I and it would be a shame to lose him. On the day I went, I was extremely down, and Steve's smile cheered me up. What a shame it would be to lose such a wonderful place.

Steve and the Hello My Friend Cafe keep the true meaning of community alive at these school. Even going back now, on recruiting jobs, 6 years after I finished law school, he still remembers me... And everyone else!
