Not keeping Steve's lease is disappointing. He's a well-loved member of the University of Alberta Law community. He's adored by faculty and staff, collects generously for the food bank, and is fondly remembered by every student in the Law Centre. Repurposing the space - into what I have no idea - is a loss. I doubt the University has something as unique and welcoming as Hello My Friend Cafe lined up to move in. If we just wanted coffee we'd walk to HUB.

I understand that the University of Alberta has declined to renew the lease of the Hello My Friend Café located in the Faculty of Law. I understand that the space occupied by the café is to be "re-purposed". I tell you that there is no purpose more important to our law school than that which is currently served by our café. The Hello My Friend Café is a hallowed place. Since opening in 2007, it has become the centre of our community. It has cultivated and sustained a unique and irreplaceable atmosphere of collegiality, acceptance, generosity, and sincerity. The Hello My Friend Café is devoted to our law school. It is a place where law students, professors, staff, lawyers and even judges not only stand in line together, but sit down together. The proprietor of this café is a staple of our law school's spirit, and has fostered an atmosphere where anyone, from a first year law student to a senior judge, is put at ease. I tell you that there is no equal or better purpose for this space, than to continue to serve and better our community as the Hello My Friend Café. I petition you to renew the lease of an independent business that has transcended its existence as a café and has become the very cornerstone of the spirit of the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. Thank you.

I was extremely disappointed to hear that Steve's lease renewal was declined. The "Hello My Friend Cafe" is an institution at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. Steve is a wonderful person and cares deeply about our community. He was kind and helpful and immediately made me feel welcome to the university. The cafe's removal would be a great loss to us all.

Steve is a member of our family and an integral part of the culture of the Law Centre. Plus he operates a better business than any chain coffee shop would, given his customer service skills and caring for everyone in the school.

Steve is an institution at this law school, as well as a great source of support to new and current students. I hope the University changes their minds on this.

This makes me so incredibly sad. This is no way to treat someone who brought so much joy and sense of community to this place. For shame UofA.

Steve is an integral part of the law school experience. There is no other person, organization, or company that can do what he does. Whether is simply putting a smile on your face, providing a caffeine fix, or leaving out food and coffee for us to have late at night when he is note there; Steve does it all. This as much an issue of the University treating people with dignity as it is about a small coffee shop with so much love. Also I among others, will boycott whatever the university elects to place there instead of Hello My Friend Café
