Steve's "Hello my Friend Cafe" is essential to the U of A law school experience and broader U of A community

Steve and Hello My Friend Café are invaluable, integral, and irreplaceable pillars of U of A Faculty of Law. Hello My Friend is an important touchstone for the student community: Steve's boundless kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity have fostered a unique environment cherished by all students who have passed through The Gavel. If the U of A holds these values dear, what does it say when they are tossed aside in favor of a 're-purposing'? Steve --and all U of A students-- deserve far better.

We don't all share teachers, or courses, but we all share Steve. As a second year with a newborn, he was a part of my success. The last thing the Law faculty needs to do is to teach that contribution and connection count for nothing in the face of profits. They have their future employers to do that.

Steve is an integral part of the Faculty of Law. He is not a simple shopkeeper or business owner. He is a mentor and friend to the students who pass through this Faculty. He is a friendly face in a place that is stressful and otherwise lacks supports systems for University students. His café fosters friendship and community between law students and with students of other Faculties. He is a remarkable and comforting individual in an otherwise difficult and unwelcoming student experience. I am certain that nothing can replace the kindness and warmth that emanates from Hello My Friend Café. That warmth and kindness has a singular source: Mr. McDiarmid. He is, and has ever been, a source of support for the students at the Faculty of Law.

The stress of law school is very overwhelming at times. Steve and "Hello My Friend Cafe" is like a life preserver for the students during tough times! The first time I came to the law building, Steve was the person who welcomed me. He was there at orientation with free coffee for the students. Steve always gives so much of himself to better the school and support the staff and students.

The "Hello My Friend Cafe" is a U of A law institution. If they abolish that, they can call Starbucks or whoever on their donation drives, because I won't be picking up the phone.

Hello My Friend Cafe is an institution at the UofA law school. Not one graduate doesn't have a fond memory of Steve and the cafe.

Steve has been there to greet the potential new students at admitted students day. He's been there to give the 1Ls their first coffee and a friendly face when they start to feel overwhelmed at orientation. At every important event, he provides food and and beverages. And on those too common late nights he provides support by leaving stuff out, showing that he really understands the law students and our priorities. He's an integral part of what makes the law faculty such a great and welcoming community. I cannot think of a single use for that space that would be more valuable then the Hello My Friend Cafe.

There should be more places like "Hello My Friend Cafe" and more people like Steve around the University and not less.

Caffeine may flow through the veins of everyone in that building... but Steve is the beating heart that keeps everyone going.

The fine arts building is directly next to law building, and many music students visit this cafe regularly. We love it and love Steve! Shutting down this cafe would affect more than just law students.

I support keeping Steve's Cafe. As well as creating a sense of community among students and faculty, Steve has provided discounts on LSA events such as the faculty lunch, to reduce costs paid from student fees, and has also been helpful in creating custom menu items for vegetarians like myself.
