Like many others, Steve was the first person I met upon arriving at U of A Law. He is an excellent ambassador for both the faculty and the university at large; however, Steve's conduct and reputation soon demonstrated that he is so much more than a friendly proprietor. Steve is a supporting and contributing member of the faculty community. In calculating the revenue/use of this tiny slice of real estate, I strongly urge the administration to consider the vast un inventoried benefits this community receives through his presence and operation here. We are blessed to have Steve among us, though if you must reduce him to an economic figure, please consider the remarkable value of his contributions beyond the rent.

Steve and the Hello My Friend Cafe are a significant feature that adds to the character of the law school and the student experience there. The decision not to renew Steve's lease is a mistake on the part of the University and should be reconsidered.

Losing Steve would be a travesty. He is one of the kindest people you will ever meet in your life. To disregard or underestimate his impact on the entirely Faculty is foolish. Not everything is about money. Steve's contribution to the Faculty is immeasurable.

Steve is the faculty's unofficial critical incident and suicide counselor. Steve's contribution to the school stretches far beyond the terms of a lease. His departure will leave a void that cannot be refilled.

When I lived in East Campus Village, visits to Steve's Cafe were regular and always brightened my day. This man is a rare example of true customer-focused care, quality service, and good old-fashioned manners. If the University cares about its "community" at all then it is exactly businesses like Steve's that we need.

Hello My Friend Cafe was one of the few stable parts of my life when I was in law school. It's truly shocking to me to think that someone is contemplating its removal. Steve's coffee shop is not just a coffee shop-- it's an integral part of our faculty's culture.

Steve has been a fixture since my days as a student at the school and every year when I return to visit friends or to work on Free Will Players shows that rent out rehearsal space at the University I look forward to going by and saying hi to Steve and getting some coffee and a snack. I think it's disgusting that the university would do something like this and yet another reason to be ashamed to be an alumni of this school.

I had to leave class a few times this year due to health problems. One of these times, my friend and I happened to walk out the back door past Steve's Cafe heading toward the clinic in SUB. Days later, I went to Steve's for my regular (a banana & a poppy seed muffin) and he asked me if I was okay. I couldn't believe he remembered, but that's how much he cares about each of us, and that is why there is nothing that could replace "Hello My Friend Cafe".

I am saddened by the decision to remove Steve's cafe. I would hope that "repurposing" does not mean putting in a franchise, we already have enough of those. I did not take Law during my time at the U, but I was introduced to Steve by a friend who frequented the place and I too, became a regular. Steve was a friendly face who made you feel welcome and who was always there with a kind word and a smile. At times when schoolwork and exams can make you feel overwhelmed, Steve's was a comfort because he made you feel as though you were a friend, not just a customer. This kind of human interaction is missing from our world, given the advent of smartphones and the elimination of Mom and Pop stores, taking away the Hello My Friend cafe is a slap in the face to Steve, who tried so hard to make his cafe different from the others in the University. This is an absolute shame and I am positively disgusted by this abrupt decision. I seriously hope that those responsible reconsider, if not for Steve, then for the fact that this cafe contributes to a positive and health atmosphere to students who frequent it.

Whatever the University's plans (or non-plans) for this space, the loss of Hello My Friend Cafe will be huge. This is more than just a local small business that needs support and charity from the institution / students. It's a hub of the Law faculty community. And it's also the livelihood of a good, caring man who has made that small corner of the Law Centre more than a coffee disepensary. Steve has contributed so much to the Law Faculty community and the mental health of students. These are things that can not be replaced by whatever the University's "repurposing" plans hold. And whatever those plans are, the short notice provided is shamefully disrepectful. Steve deserves better, as do all members of the University community.

Steve is an open and inviting face to new students (he was to me) and his cafe is a place that is outside the box, outside the franchise. It is an important part of the U of A ecology. His generosity and ability to speak across disciplines unites people and creates a level playingfield of curiosity and debate.

Steve is an invaluable part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law's vibrant sense of community. The removal of Hello My Friend Cafe would undoubtedly have a profound impact on student life, culture and well-bring. I can say with full sincerity that Steve was instrumental in my success at law school, and I have no doubt that many students feel the same way. The removal of Hello My Friend Cafe demonstrates a complete disregard for the well-being and mental health of Law Students at the UofA. From an alumni perspective, these actions raise deep concerns about the longevity and reputation of the law school if left in the hands of the current Faculty of Law administration.

Even though I don't work at the UofA anymore, I remember very fondly the always caring Steve in his coffee shop. He has created a little village with his coffee shop and it will be a shame to take it away. Please keep it alive! We need more places like "Hello my friend café" not less.
