The board officially adopted the increased preference policy today. It was a long fight to ensure our leadership reflects our community values, but we held our ground until they finally listened. We need to stay watchful to ensure they follow through on this commitment.

TMCC: Increase Native American Preference Points In The Hiring Of The President

As many know, the Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC) is in the process of hiring a new president for Turtle Mountain's Tribal College. Our college is one of the greatest assets of our community. Turtle Mountain fosters educated professionals that are capable and willing to lead this institution in a culturally sensitive manner. According to the Turtle Mountain Community College's website, the institutional philosophy is:
"Turtle Mountain Community College is a tribal community college with obligations of direct community service to the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Tribe. Under this unifying principle, the college seeks to maintain, seek out, and provide comprehensive higher education services in fields needed for true Indian self-determination."
TMCC is a key component in revitalizing the culture of our people. It is part of the mission to create an academic environment in which the culture and social heritage of the Turtle Mountain Band Chippewa is brought to bear throughout the curriculum. With a mission statement and institutional philosophy that incorporate the culture and social heritage, it is imperative that the President of this higher education institution understands the culture and social heritage in order to advocate for this institution.
The Native American Preference should be a significant component of the selection process. By signing this petition, you join the many students and community members that urge TMCC Leadership to increase the Native American preference in the process of selecting the President.

Seeing this level of support confirms that our community expects its leadership to truly reflect its heritage. It has been an exhausting road to get this concern acknowledged but knowing so many of you are with me keeps me going. We are going to keep pushing until our values are finally prioritized in this hiring process.

We encourage our younger generation to get educated beyond HS, telling them they we’ll be rewarded, with a better lifestyle. If you have educated yourself and meet the qualifications for a local position, you should have first preference, keep the dollars local, it is good for our local economy!!
We NEED a President for TMCC that is from our community and someone who knows our ways. We have people with the qualifications to do so. I don't understand why we would give a non Native American person the position before our own people who are capable of doing the job.
Indian preference should definitely be considered & also feel additional reference should be given to tribal members. Finally, it is my opinion that staff & especially faculty should play a major role in recommending a well qualified President as they possess greater knowledge & expertise as to the duties & responsibilities of this important leadership position. They know best!!
Grow our own, our school boards are local, our BIA superintendent is local, our Hospital service unit director is local, our school superintendent is local, our school principals are local, our COLLEGE PRESIDENT should be local
Understanding the Chippewa culture is an integral part of providing education. Native American preference points are critical to choosing a candidate that will honor ancestors and ensure that present-day learning is more than the 3 R's.
We have educated people qualified at home. Our main goal in education to get our people educated to come work at home. Utilize our people who are willing and qualified
What do these non-natives know about our people or culture. If there are people from the rex qualified then they should be hired.

I believe the president should be Native American, just not necessarily from here. Culture and traditions are critical to our community. As well as a person who is practicing these traditions. If you don't receive the seven teachings, I don't believe you can help our community.
