Time limits for tennis players? Time for a response - a request to the ATP & ITF

It is not make any sense to change the rules. Up till now It was not any case that someone lost because someone else exceeded the 30-second limit. We do not need tennis where we have to constantly look at the clock. I am against to change the rules

This rule is not consistently enforced, and appears to be targetting individual players. Bad language, racquet abuse etc are all ignored-surely these behaviours are more damaging to tennis?

If a player breaks his racquet he should wait until the next break in the match to change it. They don't count the time the player uses up to go and get a new racquet to give him a warning but they penalize a player who is just seconds over whilst getting ready to serve. TV is bringing the game of tennis into disrepute.

IT IS A STUPID RULE, THAT ONLY APPLY TO SOME PLAYERS. I KNOW IS ALL ABOUT MONEY FOR YOU GUYS, SO THINK TWICE, FOR YOUR OWN BENEFIT AND FOR THE MATCHES, THE LONGER, THE BETTER, MUCH MORE MONEY ON YOUR HANDS!! SUCH A SHAME!!

Why is it always poor Rafa about to serve maybe RAFA should turn the tables and ask the umpire to give other players a time violation on a serve point but Rafa is a better sportsman than those who request a time violation against Rafa and THE UMPIRE OBLIGES!!! knowing it is TACTICS.!!!!

Apart from the fact that the rule is being used in a way in which it was not originally intended, the fact that it is imposed so randomly by different umpires (or not randomly when chosen to be used at break point down when there have been other opportunities to implement it at less crucial moments) makes a compete mockery of the rule. Tennis is much more physical these days, so why take away time? What is better - 25 seconds inbetween points and less good tennis, or 28 seconds and higher quality? Surely it can't be wrong for the time taken to fluctuate according to the nature or the preceding rally or the point of the match? Regardless of the above, until all umpires apply the rule in the same way with every player that is in front of them, and until the umpires apply all of the rules (bad language, racquet abuse to name two), the ATP and ITF are giving the idea that there is not fair treatment for all, and the umpires are actively influencing the results of matches. I have heard people compare it to match fixing.....

Perhaps the imposition of fines in lieu of point penalties should be considered. It would be in line with the consequences for verbal and equipment abuse, and would not affect the outcome of games, thus avoiding the appearance of match fixing. Penalties on crucial points certainly DO affect the final scores, are inconsistent, and are patently unfair.

It seems that Rafael Nadal is constantly getting called on a time violation especially on important points. If the rule is not applied to everyone, then it should be done away with. I think the players should be given 30 seconds between points. They need this time after a grueling rally.

Since Miami this year I have been keeping a record of the Time violations Nadal has received and at what point in the match he received them. Miami 2015 Nadal against Versdasco. Nadal serving in the first set at 4-5 on brake/set point. He receives a time violation and loses the set Monte Carlo 2015 Nadal against Isner. 2nd set Nadal serving at 4-4, 30-40. Isner asks the Umpire to give Nadal a time violation and the Umpire obliges. Nadal loses his serve. Isner holds for the set Nadal against Ferrer. 1st set Nadal serving 3-3, 30-30 time violation. 2nd set Nadal serving at 3-3, 30-30 time violation. 3rd set Nadal serving at 3-2, 30-40 time violation Barcelona Nadal against Almagro. Nadal got a first time violation early in the first set. 2nd set Nadal serving for the match 40-40. Almagro asked the Umpire to give Nadal a time violation and the Umpire obliged. Madrid Nadal serving against Dimitrov at 1-1, 30-40 was given a time violation. He was broken. Rome Nadal serving for the match against Isner at 5-4, 15-30 (not a break point but about as near as Isner got to one) was given a time violation. Nadal serving against Wawrinka at 6-7, 1-1, 30-40 (break point) was given a time violation and was broken. French Open Nadal serving for the match against Sock6-3, 6-1, 5-4, 30-40 time violation loss of first serve and was broken. Nadal serving to stay in the first set against Djokovic at 4-5, 40-40 time violation given. Stuttgart Nadal serving for the first set against Tomic 5-4, Ad Tomic (break point) time violation given. Queens Nadal serving against Dolgopolov at 3-6, 7-6, 4-3, 30-40 time violation given. To illustrate the randomness of the time violations I noted the times taken between points in the entire game were Nadal received a time violation. He took 25, 28, 28, 28, 26 (time violation break point), 32(Dolgopolov challenged therefore this took more time ), 27 seconds between points. This game was near the end of a long ma

This time violation rule is being applied unjustly and unfairly. How can an umpire call it on break-pointing down when a player is fighting back to gain supremacy? It beggars the question - who is in control of the match outcome - the player or the umpire? How can this be considered right or true to the spirit of the sport?

Were the players consulted before enforcement of this rule was implemented? No. The ATP is supposed to be working for the players not against them. One player, Roger Federer, has the ATP dancing to his tune and this rule has a lot to with him to stop Nadal catching up with his record of slams. The commentators who campaigned for the rule enforcement are now unhappy at the unfairness of it all and now feel something has to change. How are the players supposed to know when the umpire starts counting and when the time is up without a clock on court?

Do away with the stupid rule.

the time limit rule, if there HAS to be one, should not be used based on one persons' opinion of when to enforce!

A rule is not a rule when it is applied randomly. A warning and escalation of penalties should be applied every time the rule is broken or scrap the rule.

Time limits are ridiculous. Have they increased viewership? Doubtful.

I signed the 250th petition to meet the target. Definitely needs consideration though so lets keep going!!

they are targeting a certain player with this time limit thing! how about doing something about the foul language they are allowing?????
