This preposterous provision is as preposterous as the PSC. It is high time to revamp our failing union.

There is no education without adjunct labor. They should be treated in a way that reflects their importance to education.

I had this same concern when I was told about this new contract offering that it would be used by the department as an excuse to bring in newer adjuncts at a lower pay scale.

If this allegation is true, then the contract needs to be voted on again! This clause is a DEAL-BREAKER for me.

This "up-or-out" provision threatens the work security of adjuncts, and provides no benefit to the department, the college, or CUNY as a whole. It would be a material alteration of the Contract to instate and enforce this provision. This is not an ethical or legal move. PSC and CUNY ought to affirm that any adjunct who applies for a 3-year appointment will remain eligible, if not given the 3-year appointment, for one-year and one-semester appointments in all subsequent semesters. The adjuncts deserve this. The departments need this to have access to the widest pool of eligible, known, experienced instructors possible.

Why can't CUNY help ensure its employees can make a living?

You had representatives call me and advise me to rescind my 2 year request and submit for a 3 year!

After 11 years of teaching as an adjuct at KCC and getting my masters degree, I would love to be considered for a three-year appointment” (¶ 2);

I feel that the recent contract did not do anywhere near enough for adjuncts, and this measure is really restrictive, which adds to a deplorable situation. Adjuncts need higher pay across the board--CUNY is one of the lowest-paying employers of adjunct faculty in NYC.

Yes, we need to protect our jobs. I am concerned about the issues raised on the petition and support the proposal to insure our right to retain our one-year appointments if we are unable to get three year appointments.

I told you so. All bribes and cleaning house.

Implementing such a policy would be yet another grave insult to all the adjuncts who have worked so hard and been treated so poorly.

I applied for a 2 year appointment. Does this petition include that appointment.

Please allow adjuncts who ae not offered a three year position to work on one year contracts ongoing.

The 3-year provision is simply crazy, and not just from the adjuncts' point of view. What about departments that have a need, say, for a one-year substitute due to a sabbatical absence? Should they dismiss all fully qualified applicants who apply for a longer duration appointment in the department, but would accept a shorter one? What is the purpose of limiting the freedom of choice of the department?

As a chair of many,many long term adjuncts I support this petition. The PSC agenda has frequently had unintended yet deleterious consequences on adjuncts.

I agree with this petition. The current stipulations put adjuncts and departments in problematic situations. Not moving forward with a three-year contract does not mean the department wants to leave no option to re-hire a longtime adjunct.

This clearly needs to be fixed.

Clarity on this question is very important.
