The slave market, affectionately known as the Market Square is a symbol of hate and divisiveness. Each and every time that I pass this place of shame, my heart aches for my forefathers that were treated and sold like cattle. I feel that it is revered as a symbol of superiority for some. As a former educator, I was flabbergasted to learn that some of the white children in the community were being taught that it was used to sell fruit and vegetables. I feel that this symbol of hatred serves to not only keep our community divided but prevents its economic growth.

Is it that people of Jefferson County Ga. and people abroad believe or think that it should remain standing in the middle of downtown Louisville Ga., and our country as a symbol of hate, crime, violence, racism, and depression towards black people? Is it that you are afraid to sign this petition and protest removing it?

As a community of love and peace, we must now do the right thing, the slave market located in the heart of our dear community is a continued symbol and constant reminder of hate, crime, violence, discrimination, racism, and oppression that was once wickedly thrust upon black people without sympathy, this piece of monstrosity really serves no purpose except to keep a constant dark cloud over the black community and our beloved county, Jefferson. So let us, of all races voice our concern in Jefferson County Georgia, to come together and denounce this symbol of hate and request it to be torn down or removed from yonder place to a museum.
