I come from a long line of indigenous woman who were treated in ways that you could never imagine. For you to use “squaw” as something trendy... it is despicable and disgusting. Maybe, if you were to take American Indian history class you would know better... but probably not because you are disrespectful and degrading just like your ancestors.

Unless the owner is indigenous, she should stay away from using squaw. Even the dictionary lists that the term is offensive.

Ok. So you claim you “did not know” your business name was hurtful, racist and derogatory, as evidenced by history as well as the ongoing genocide of indigenous cultures...now you know. Take the high road, show the world your brain works, and CHANGE THE NAME. It’s not just the only acceptable thing to do, it’s good for business.

Change the name of your racist boutique. If you really didn’t know, now you know. Instead of getting uncomfortable and defensive, listen to the voices of the people you are offending . Do the right thing

Even of one Indigenous woman says that it's a racist word.... it's a racist word. Us white people don't get to pick and chose the words of oppression so long as we are doing the oppresskng.

Come on. I am a “white girl” and I’m a business owner. You’ve gotta own your stuff, apologize and change your name. Maybe you didn’t know how offensive this was but it’s not too late to change it!

Using a racial slur in your business name is not acceptable and it’s not good branding.

Come on, you really want to keep a racist tag on your company? Your apology stated that you didn’t know the word’s negative connotation. But you do know. Every moment it stays is you DECIDING to be a bigot. Be better.

While the word "squaw" in some tribes does not have the meaning of vagina in other tribes it does. The problem with continuing the use of the word "squaw" is that in today's history and context it is a derogatory term. However, the biggest issue I have with your use of the term is that you are in no way Native American and you are guilty of cultural appropriation find a name within your culture that can have the meaning you are looking to portray. If you are claiming to use "squaw" in reference to the Algonquian meaning of woman there are so many other words a thesaurus can help you find. Keep in mind that while "squaw" comes up under thesaurus it states '"Over the years it has come to have a derogatory sense and is now considered offensive by many Native Americans" [Bright].'
