Should not happen education is not academics alone by expulsion you actually destroy the confidence of the child and also instill inferiority complex not to forget the humiliation the child goes through not to forget if it results in something drastic that the child does then who takes the responsibility will the school take it so in other words a criminal wrongdoing can be charged against the institution itself

No matter what the faculty and administration says, this institution only looks out for itself, its reputation and its legacy, not for the wellbeing of its students. It's unfair that this girl should have to start over in a new school just months before she might go to a place of higher learning or possibly impact the rest of her career. It's shameful that a place that so many young women call home would turn its back on one girl because they want to keep a graduation rate intact. And people ask me why I look back on St. Joseph Hill with bad memories; this school purposely pushes young girls into believing they're not good enough. I've had my fair share of that experience and now this girl has to carry that as well. St. Joseph Hill, you could and should do better. Sincerely, A Mortified Alumna.

Guess what, you are being told everything.
Here's the story, I actually wasn't "expelled" I was transferred.
The faculty of SJHA didn't want me to mess up their 100% Graduation stat so they gave me the boot before I could; forcing me to transfer. If you look at my record I don't have any expulsions or suspensions, nothing. Yeah, I have a couple of detentions for things like forgetting sweater, forgetting my absentee card, wearing a bracelet, and the kicker, my mom forgetting to call me in (which I had to serve detention for) but never ever have I done anything that merits me being thrown out before I could graduate from the place I spent over 3 years in.
Anyone that knows me knows how much I love that place. The amount of time I spent their helping out, doing things I didn't have too but chose too because that school was my home away from home.
The amount of Friday nights I gave up to volunteer at school events.
The way I treated my teachers with the utmost respect each and every day.
How I was friends with almost every body, how I had friends in all different areas of the school from the soccer team to the math club to the drama club, I knew everyone and I loved them all.
This school took something away from that I'll never get back. They took away my home.
60 days before I graduate and they took it away from me because I was failing ONE class. I wasn't even given the chance to pass or fail. They saw that I MIGHT not be able to make the grade and that was it.
They got rid of what could've been a failure on their record by forcing me to transfer. However, even though I transferred I'm still not enrolled anywhere because what Catholic high school wants to take a senior, the answer is none.
So now after spending 3 years at Hill I will finish out my senior year in a public school, where I know no one.
I won't have a prom, I won't have a trip to Disney, and I will definitely not be attending a graduation.
I will go in, get my diploma, and get out

Why does something tell me there is a lot more to the story than what everyone is hearing and saying. I know a few students in Hill that never go to school, never do homework, have one excuse after another why they can't take tests, etc and they are graduating. We are not being told everything.

St. Joseph Hill Academy does not concern itself with the student's own personal or academic issues. They are, truly, only concerned with their public image. I don't know how many times I've heard, 100% of our graduating class goes to college, 100% of our graduating class have taken APs or have an advanced Regents Diploma. The school relies on these numbers to keep them going and they only eliminated poor Alexis because she was outside what they considered to be the "norm" for their class. No one should be expelled during the last 60 days of their senior year, especially for failing one class. She should have been offered extensive help by the school she is paid 4 years of tuition for. And if this failed, then she should have been offered summer school. This is outrageous and I truly believe that if this situation were to become public knowledge, the school would shape up real quick. I sincerely hope Alexis doesn't let the school's lack of empathy or moral compass impact her success.

We do not know all of the information about this particular student's situation, but I can personally speak about my own situation with SJHA during my senior year, as well as many many other students in my same situation. A handful of students missed a homework assignment in senior year religion - instead of the teacher confronting us and asking us where it was or WHY we didn't submit it, she ran to the principal and VP, they then took all of our PASSING grades off edline, only posted the 0 and told our parents were failing. Instead of asking us why we missed it or talking with us, they forbade us from wearing our senior sweaters, and threatened to take away our senior trip and our prom, and even graduation... OVER ONE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT. None of us were failing. Parents were enraged and this situation only lasted about a week. Regardless, the way that situation was handle was highly inappropriate and it wouldn't surprise me if this was too. If this girl was failing so badly she wasn't going to graduate, they should have pulled the plug way before 60 days before graduation. I'm disappointed in you St. Joseph Hill. No student left behind, Jesus would never leave his struggling followers behind.

How catholic are they now? God never turned his back in his people! The catholic schools today are s business, not a religion! This can scar this child for life. So, they gave her a warning, this is not enough she is 17 years old, when a catholic child falls the school is supposed to be there to carry them. This is just not fair or just. I am losing faith in the people who teach or religion, they are sending all the wrong messages!

This is absolute insanity, the administration should be ashamed with themselves... There is absolutely no reason to expel a student on the premise of grades with only 60 days left of school... If academic performance was such an issue it should have been settled a long time ago but to make this decision now is ridiculous

Mr. Ahern you talk about the child being warned about her grade and the outcome if it didnt improve. You talk about adults and the institution keeping their word. Why don't you ask yourself how this school kept taking the families monthly check and then with three months left decided to take the cowardly road and ask her not to return. They did not in any way make sure this student passed her subject. She was written off since they got most of their money. I hope Staten Island wakes up to the fact that this is not a good example and message to send any young person!

I find this totally disturbing. How can St. Joseph Hill Academy tell thus young girl to leave the school? Was this a formal expulsion? They claim she was "warned" that if she failed a class she would be asked to leave. Did they offer her tutoring? Did they provide any extra credit work to boost her grade? No they dis not. Did they take their monthly tuition? Oh I am sure they did!! 60 full school days left and they tell her to leave. Why? How can this High School which is operated by the "Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity" feel that this is a good and sound decision for this student? All it is saying is that we give up on you. Not very charitable!! How can they go to mass and listen to the gospel and profess their faith when they are acting in such an uncaring manor? Tell me St. Joseph Hill Academy HS, what would Jesus do?
