The dump is going to start causes problems for the tourism industry, which is primarily this island's main source of income. If this creates problems then we would start loosing tourist, who come to see the island's beauty

When the dump burns it emits cancerous particles. Sooner or later the dump will start killing people.

The dump not only ruins St. Maarten's reputation for beauty, but also imposes immunity disorders and cancer. The SXM government is responsible for, not limited to, the order and safety of the island but also for the people's physical and well-being caused by the dump. Because, what do we, the citizens, pay taxes and fares for? To breath cancerous air?

I am on Sxm for over 40 years. During all these years nothing has been done on the garbage solution. Shame on all who were in government all these years.

I am just a frequent visitor to Sint Maarten, and the smoke gave me a coughing fit that lasted almost an hour (and I am no Asthmatic - and rarely get sick) just this last week on Thursday 28th April at 3.30pm, who knows what toxins are becoming airborne in this smoke....it can't be healthy by any stretch of the imagination.

Plastic, batteries, paint, oil, packaging all toxic items included in garbage... burning, burning...
There's nowhere to escape the smoke.
I saw it yesterday again, I felt for the people living all around the pond and downtown. Don't know how they can breathe... the unconsciousness of it, is mind boggling... IF we at least separated the garbage: recycling, garbage, toxic products and the compostables... make a huge compost that could serve for gardening... Because it's hot here it turns really fast mixed with garden waste and a bit of soil.... before you know it , it's rich soil... They do it in other countries. Why can't we? HERE we NEED it. I bet if there was money to be made there would be ACTION>... recycling is way due.

It's a no-brainer that prevention of toxic smoke coming from a mass of unidentified objects should be a priority on any responsible leader's agenda. Residents should not have to beg for this problem to be taken seriously. However, I commend everyone who initiated this petition and everyone who has signed it! Taking action is the first step to affecting change. It goes without saying that every 'leader' who has turned a blind eye to this issue has failed St.Maarten tremendously..in more ways than one. To them I say Google is your friend, toxic smoke and ash are not ;).
