This is a petition to raise awareness of the lack of sexual education in "Bible-belt" states. The main state that we are focusing on is Georgia, but we will expand our outreach soon. As of right now, Georgia only provides an abstinence-based curriculum. We are petitioning to add a choice for parents about whether their child(ren) learn about abstinence or sexual education. This would require that the Georgia BOE will provide a Sexual Education class. As of right now, no health class in Georgia is required to teach about contraceptives such as condoms or birth control. Georgia health classes are also not required to teach about how to prevent sexual abuse or rape. Our goal is to raise awareness to the Georgia BOE and, eventually, the nation about how uninformed the public is about date rape and contraceptives. Please don't hesitate to support our cause.
The word "consent" was never used once in any of my k-12 sex education lessons. Because it is never discussed formally, many young people believe that there is a "grey area" between a yes and a no in a sexual or even romantic situation and that unfortunately gets many young people in some situations that they may not wish to be in. Adults need to accept that young people know a lot more than they care to think about. The sooner the idea of consent is taught in a young person's life, the sooner "consent" is the norm in our society.
