My gran worked for Bairnsfather and he gave her one of his OLd Bill cartoons in about 1940, as he had done so many years before to the troops in the first World War trenches.

I remember my father saying "The only good thing to come out of the war was the Old Bill cartoons." Bruce Bairnsfather deserves greater recognition.

The power of Bairnsfather's cartoons cannot be underestimated. Respected by soldiers and civilians alike, his 'Fragments from France' carry the authentic voice of the man in the trenches.

As my grandfather Bruce Bairnsfather wrote in his autobiography Wide Canvas, "Old Bill is both real and ageless, for he exemplfies a certain side of the permanent spirit of the British people." I think it only fitting and proper that the creator of such a character should, one hundred years on, be given the recognition that most assuredly he earned.

We are delighted to support our dear friend's Tonie and Valmai Holt's campaign to give recognition to Bruce Bairnsfather's contribution to WW1. War is not the type of 'ole anyone wants to be in.
