I'm a Lecturer in Creative and Critical Writing at Birkbeck, University of London. Lawrence Upton is a poet of international importance. His work as a sound and visual poet, as a collaborator with expertise at working across art forms, and as an improviser needs to be archived and opened up to future scholarship. Upton has influenced a whole generation of contemporary poets who are still working today to respect and revitalise the legacy of the British Poetry Revival. Upton's contribution to the National Poetry Centre in the 1970s, The Poetry Society, the Association of Small Presses, and Writers Forum, was crucial and significant. He was a key collaborator of the major British Sound and Concrete poet Bob Cobbing . Upton held much of the Writers Forum archive including rare stencils from which many of the Writers Forum publications were made. Upton's work needs to be saved.

Poet's archives are a real and serious resource. So are poets--even little known, uncommercial ones. Please treat this with seriousness and respect.
