I would be personally most interested in seeing Lawrence Upton's papers preserved, as they include the (unique) camera-ready copy of a book I edited which has never appeared; and now never can, unless these important papers are safely secured!

Van Gogh sold one painting while he was alive. Zora Neale Hurston died penniless and was buried in an unmarked grave. Shakespeare received scant notice at his death and only after he died were his plays printed, largely from the memories of his actors. Do not value artists by their popularity at the time of their passing.

Lawrence Upton was a seminal figure in the poetry world. His archive is invaluable and must be protected and secured with the deepest possible respect and recognition. To do otherwise would be a travesty.

It would be an act of vandalism pure and simple not to secure this irreplaceable archive.

Lawrence Upton's work and influence on the cutting edge of British poetics spans decades and is full of riches; sometimes the unfinished materials can tell us even more about a poet and the larger poetry scene than published accomplishments. Please be aware that universities like my own (Notre Dame) are deeply interested in archiving and making available such materials; in some ways they're of more interest to libraries than physical books in this day and age.

As both a poet and an archivist, I would like to ask that the papers of Lawrence Upton be saved for future generations of scholars and be placed in the safe-keeping of a suitable repository.
