No one should have to start a 66 mile race at 1pm in September in Texas. It might be harder to organize, but it would make for a better experience for those involved, and that's what this is about.

I agree. I'd imagine the importance of a 66 mile woman's 1,2 race would take precedence over (as an example) the men's cat 5 race which is half the distance.

Andy - thank you for putting on one of my favorite races of the season. As many have stated, heat exhaustion is a very real concern, regardless of gender. I have personally experienced it. Reducing the mileage isn't an option for the cat 3 women, where a race of 40+ is needed for upgrade points. This is the state championship and it is respectful of their abilities to keep it at 66 miles. The cat 3 women I know can keep up with local 60+ group rides without a problem (and even beat the men). Texas has a lot of talent, and it will serve all of us to continue to grow women's racing. It is both reasonable and logistically feasible to move the women's races to a time where heat isn't a health risk, while still respecting the other racers.

As a former pro/expert mtn bike racer I speak from experience. Treat the pros like pros, no matter what gender.

I really appreciate all the effort and energy that goes into organizing races, especially state championships, although the women P/1/2 typically take longer to race than other categories going the same distance (partly due to fewer numbers) is now compounded by the heat of the day. I agree it would be more fair for us to race in the earlier hours, especially when there are lower category men's races that are shorter and could thus race later.

Hi Andy, Yes. An earlier time would not only produce a more exciting and dynamic race, it would reward the countless hours of hard work these women pour into their passion. Regarding the cat 3 distance...I believe I was part of the reason you'd like to shorten the race. Last year I raced cat 3 championship 6 months after giving birth to my daughter. I was determined to make the race hard. I did this and it resulted in a shattering of the field. Alexis H was the strongest and soloed to the win and the rest you know. The heat had a huge impact on the race and though I know the second lap was slower then the first, I don't believe this would've been the case in less extreme conditions. It took me at least 2 hours before I could stomach food or drink post race all the while caring for my daughter who was along for the fun. I suffered intensely from the hard effort in the heat. I realize I chose to race and I would chose to all over again. However, shortening the cat 3 race doesn't encourage women cyclists to rise to the occasion. It is somewhat discouraging and disheartening. The fight to excel and gain recognition in the cycling world continues. Aside from all this, thank you for all you do. From the bottom of my heart.

The Texas women's racing scene is one of the best in the country. We deserve to be treated with respect. Please consider moving up the start time for the Women's 1/2 race, a change based off of distance rather than gender. Secondly, as a Cat 3 racer, I would greatly appreciate the courtesy of a race at least 40 miles.
