There are always trade-offs between utility and security - however, when students' ability to access critical course information is in question, utility should be the first concern. Tying that ability to a device notorious for being lost or damaged shows a great lack of thought on the subject..
Don't get why HokieSPA & Canvas need 2 steps to login, yet hell my BANK ACCOUNT with Wells Fargo only requires a password. Damn it Tech, just retreat & allow students to opt out from this mess.
I have a basic phone.... I have to rely on texts to get into my online account. I shouldn't need to rely on my phone so heavily. All the teachers always complain about how much we use our phones and yet all of a sudden they want us to be more dependent on them?
I completely agree. The two factor authentication 1: does absolutely nothing to deterr data theft, 2: acts to further tether this generation to smart phones and create a massive dependence on cellphones, and 3: is inconvenient for those who cannot afford a smartphone which is capable of accessing the app.
I've already had a professor tell me to put my phone away when I was just trying to log in to Scholar to access the class syllabus. Not to mention if my phone ever freezes or runs out of battery, I miss class assignments. It's an accessibility issue as well as a hassle and distraction in class.
It's not user friendly
I cant pay for my childs college. :(

It's pretty ridiculous. A per-device 2-factor system would be so much better. If someone is trying to access you account from an invalid computer, it doesn't work. If they try to access it from your computer, you know it's been stolen, and have probably already had it frozen.
