Let's all be glad that these millennial rabble-rousers didn't get their way. Flags are symbols, and symbols are solely defined by individual opinions. What's racist to one person isn't necessarily racist to the next, and if anyone out there thinks the MS State flag is a symbol of Southern heritage, it deserves to fly same as any other.

For what people to say that a flag hurts their feelings. What about gangs? They have colors, and they represent symbols. I don't see anybody banning that now do I.

How does it hurt others? It is a flag that has been around for many generations and over 100 years. Many people have gone to MSU since then and never had a problem. If it offends people then don't think of it as a symbol of Confederacy think of it as a piece of history like the American flag is... or does that offend people as well.

I understand the flag is a representation of Southern heritage, however if the representation hurts and offends others I strongly believe it needs to be removed.

The university needs to change itself in the way it treats people of color. The university has been firing or making administrators of color step down from their administrative positions. Examples are: 1. Dr. Achille Messac from the position of the Dean of College of Engineering, 2. Dr. Beatrice Tatem from the position of Director, Student Counseling and Testing Services, 3. Dr. Sam Chang from the position of Head, Department of Food Science, AND MANY OTHERS. The bringing down of the state flag is a good starting point and the university needs to appoint black administrators (President and, Provost) so that there is a change in climate.

MSU is a powerful voice in Mississippi. We should be standing up for what is right and using our voice for good rather than standing passively on the sidelines, especially when our own students tell us they are hurt and offended by our refusal to do so. Take it down.

We can't wait for unreasonable people to decide to do the right thing. As an institution of higher learning, we should be leading by action and do the right thing. Take down the flag!

I'm very proud of our MSU students and our Starkville community for their work to change the emblem of our state into something that reflects goodwill towards all its citizens.

Plenty of others have already made the argument. The state flag was adopted in the Jim Crow era by segregationists. We're the last major university in the state to act, and it's time for us to do more than just talk about doing what is right.

As a former MSU student and native Mississippian, I find such images as the Confederate flag troubling and a bitter part of the past. Let's take a stand and be on the right side of justice and history!
