Whitehaven grandfather Jim Higgins thought he was helping his community when he took it upon himself to clear an overgrown cycle path near his home.
The 65-year-old removed brambles, erected a bench and cut down 130 meters (426ft) of metal railings, which he sold to buy new wooden fence posts.
But charity Sustrans, which owns the Moor Row path, said he did the work and sold the railings without permission.
He has now been questioned by police and faces being prosecuted.

Maybe a bit more effort should be placed on fining dog walkers who leave the path in a mess instead of prosecuting people who try to make a difference? Just a thought!

Leave Jim alone. He done more for that path than Sustrans have done in years.
Absolute madness. The man just wanted to tidy the place up and make it look decent for the community and now he has the police at his door. Sort it out Sustrans.
My grandkids love the little benches he put in. Why are you attacking someone who actually cares about the area? Ridiculous waste of everyone's time.

Me and my daughter Annie visited Fairy land at Moor Row today and had a fantastic time she meet an old friend that has moved schools for the first time in about 14 months looking forward to going again very soon many thanks to the kind gentleman that has done all the good work making this a very nice place to visit VERY WELL DONE This man has spent his time and effort to tidy this little part of the cycle track and make it look nice shame on you Sustrans if you came up and cut the grass on the land you own instead of picking on old men you might have just a little bit of respect, when I was there today there was at least 5 family's with kids there Shame on you
