I AM a principal, and this story saddened me. I believe my job is to help cultivate an environment in schools where students who may look differently then each other and may think differently than each other can celebrate their unique qualities andcan interact with each other in meaningful ways in order to grow into the globally minded citizens this world so desperately needs. Telling a person that her / his natural hairstyle is not appropriate is appalling.

It is a disgrace to associate anyone's natural form with untidiness or lack of professionalism. Women in general are made to feel ashamed of their body hair and Black women specifically are told that unless they alter their hair in a way that resembles Caucasian hair, their appearance is unacceptable. Black women are therefore doubly economically disadvantaged in this context- by the 'pink tax' and by a 'black tax'. All women should be allowed to wear their hair as they like it, and to get on with more important business, without having their consciousness repeatedly turned back in on their outer appearances.

Children should feel proud of their identity, and not be victimised because of their hair texture. It is just like telling someone with naturally red hair to dye it to a more 'conservative' colour.

I think the teachers comments are so unbelievably petty and short sighted. What's more important is what's going on INSIDE our young black women's heads, not what's on the outside. I had a fat, balding deputy head mistress who went on and on at me about when I was going to CUT my (mixed race) long black curly hair! Thank goodness I had parents who realised that my hair was not a fashion statement and goodness knows when curly hair wasn't fashionable, I still had curly, frizzy, puffy hair! SUPPORT THE PUFF. It's natural and gorgeous. Mx

We must never allow society dictate to us what we should look like. What is important is what is inside and we must nurture our children to appreciate that.
