Dear Senator Specter:
We are writing to seek an appropriation of $5 million in the 2008 budget for the National History Day, Inc. (NHD) program that was authorized by P.L. 108-474, the American History and Civics Education Act.
All states would receive a portion of the $5 million appropriation. Through your leadership, Senator, our state\'s most under-served student populations in urban and rural areas can access the educational benefits of National History Day. PA National History Day officials estimate they can leverage each federal dollar to earn an additional $3.06. With volunteer labor (mentors, teachers, organizers) valued at another $280,000, this appropriation can be a powerful tool to help Pennsylvania students achieve their highest potential.
Congress has unanimously passed resolutions recognizing the growing need to improve the teaching and learning of history education. As George Washington wrote,
We hit 250 signatures and Senator Specter still refuses to commit the funding these students deserve. This bureaucracy is failing our kids while they waste millions elsewhere. Keep the pressure on because we are not backing down until the budget reflects our priorities.

Senator Specter has ignored our letters for too long but this surge of momentum proves they can no longer pretend we do not exist. We hold the power here and it is time to force this funding through so our students finally get the resources they deserve.

We just hit 100 signatures and Senator Specter can no longer pretend this issue is invisible. He thinks he can ignore the importance of history education while students fall behind but this shows he is wrong.

Kids today dont know anything about our own history. This is such a tiny amount of money compared to what they waste on other stuff. Do it.

5 million is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Get this done for the students.

History is fading out of schools way too fast. My niece did this program and she actually loves studying the past now. Keep it funded.

So important. If they dont learn history they are doomed to repeat all the mistakes. Keep the program going.
