Support ASE Status for College Academic Mentors!

Especially in light of the plan to increase enrollment in the UC campuses (https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/press-room/regents-committees-approve-plan-enroll-more-californians), there must be a reality check: who can help advise the increase of undergraduates being admitted and matriculating to UCLA? College Academic Mentors are an important part of our commitment to ensuring the success of students on campus, BOTH at the undergraduate and graduate level. Undergraduate students can have drop-in appointments with CAMs, learn more in workshops led by CAMs, and have more meaningful interactions that might not sometimes be met by the limited number of wonderful full-time advisors at College Academic Counseling. By receiving fee remissions, graduate students who work as CAMs are able to focus on their studies and service as advisors. Please reconsider and think of the bigger picture.

As an Academic Counselor in the College, I consistently witness the wonderful impact that CAMs have on undergraduate students. Without the support of CAMs, many undergraduate students will not have access to advising resources that are vital to their student success.

CAMs are an invaluable resource for UCLA undergraduates and are essential to meeting the ever increasing demands for quality academic advising. Losing the CAM program would impact 1000’s of students.

Academic Mentoring plays a vital role in the lives of our underrepresented students. If it was not for these individuals many of our marginalized students would not be in college!

These students DESERVE AND EARN to have tuition remission in this position. They are hardworking and incredible people who bring so much to UCLA.

Any impedement to our brightest scholars who are trying to work their work their way through the american "academic" system is indefensible

It is unfair and unjust for current educational avenues to not support future and current educators.

CAMs are a vital part of the UCLA counseling community, not only as mentors but as role models. The valuable service they provide is one that merits fee remission. Please support the funding of thier graduate programs as they support our undergraduates in various ways.

My graduate assistant position is what helped me secure a full time position once I graduated. They are not only vital to staffing a university but beneficial for the graduates future!

The CAM program consists of a team of passionate, caring, driven, and inspiring leaders and educators who guide, facilitate, and support undergraduates as they navigate the opportunities, challenges, and their potential at UCLA and beyond. CAMs provide the valuable human contact that students still seek out despite their otherwise technology-driven attachments. Student interaction with CAMs is often a sacred space to be vulnerable without judgment, and a supportive environment that validates student's struggles and celebrates their accomplishments. Among the CAMs themselves, it is a community of scholars who share the experiences of the graduate school journey. It is an indispensable network of support and camaraderie that promotes and encourages diversity, intellectual rigor, and professional collegiality. CAMs enrich the campus community and research scholarship, and are invigorated themselves by the knowledge of their impact on students' lives and perspectives about college and beyond. Continued institutional support of the CAM program has profound implications in fostering a climate of persistence, collaboration, pride, and inspiration among our undergraduate and graduate students.

I had the honor of being a College Academic Mentor. The work I did as a CAM was life-changing to me and impacted my current career in higher education. The CAM program is very important for undergraduate students in the College of Letters and Science and cannot imagine what devastating effect this will have on student academic success at UCLA. If it wasn’t for the funding I received with my position as a CAM I would be in large debt or would more than likely have to turn down the position. CAM graduate students are dedicated to student success and wellness and the future of UCLA.

As a former TRIO professional, and as someone who now works with re-entry adults trying to finish their Associate and Bachelor's degrees, I can attest to the power of having academic mentors for any student. However, first generation students are particularly supported by academic mentors. Please consider reinstating the CAM program.

Because they are essential to student success at UCLA and are also students themselves who have committed to the institution.

The CAM program is essential to UCLA. The CAMS do not only provide academic advising, they connect students to resources on campus, we help students process feelings and support their transition. The CAM program is wonderful and stripping it down this way will affect both undergrad and graduate students negatively.

The CAMs provide a critical service to our undergraduates that supports the university mission, and makes it possible for our students to get the advising and information they need. In addition, this program provides valuable experience for our graduate students that, among other things, can give a distinct edge when applying for academic or other positions. CAC cannot serve UCLA undergraduates without this invaluable program. Also, our CAMs are amazing people!!

Education is the pillar of society, please help those who diligently work to make it better.
