As a former CAM, and someone who now works full time as a departmental advisor, I urge UCLA to not cut funding/change status for this vital position.

Tutors should keep their right to feel remission and provided health care, at least until the following school year so that students have ample time to apply for other funding opportunities to support their livelihood as a graduate student.

As a psychotherapist who counsels UCLA students, I know how important CAMs are. Threatening their viability is beyond reproach. CAMs are a lifeline for many undergrads.

As a former CAM, I cannot express how vital my two years were at CAC for the completion of my graduate programs, my well-being, my sense of community on campus, and my commitment to serving UCLA undergrads. Countless undergrads sincerely thanked me for our sessions, letting me know that they would feel so lost at UCLA without us. Removing the fee remission benefit of this position would be terrible for undergraduates and CAMs alike. Please reconsider your action. Thank you.

By refusing to support the graduate students serving the UCLA community through this program, you are not supporting the UCLA community. Period. The decision to cut these benefits is short-sighted and without consideration to the long-term effects on both the graduate students and undergraduate students at risk. If you really care about being an inclusive campus and supporting students from all walks of life, UCLA, you will reverse this decision and provide students the support they need.

The decision to strip funding from students who are doing necessary, valid, and oftentimes thankless labor on behalf of the university is appalling. If UCLA truly has a commitment to its graduate students and employees, they will reverse their decision to remove the remission and insurance benefits of advising position.

This position structured with tuition remission is the main reason I was able to continue on at UCLA to pursue my PhD. As a first generation, former homeless and foster youth, I could not continue without health insurance or tuition remission. Being told this late in the academic year, I may not be able to continue at all. This is wrong on so many levels. UCLA SUPPORT YOUR GRADUATE STUDENTS INSTEAD OF FURTHER MARGINALIZING THEM!
