All the great education we're offering students at the UW Madison will be for naught if don't get climate change under control. Climate change is becoming such a destructive force that all their efforts will have to go to managing the chaos and catastrophes that are looming because of our dependency on fossil fuels. UW Madison has an opportunity, nay imperative, to pursue clean energy solutions now, and that will also be cost effective and lower UW Madison's operating costs.

UW-Madison needs to continue to be a leader in sustainability to set an example for other universities also combating climate change. I urge the Board of Regents and the State Building Commission to support a strong sustainability and climate mitigation West Campus District Plan that exceeds public expectation.

UW uses too much fossil energy and generates an absurd amount of polluting traffic. UW needs to have buildings using maximum insulation, maximum energy efficiency, and a maximum production of clean, renewable energy to heat, cool, and light all campus spaces. Stormwater must be minimized, pretreated and controlled in order to protect Lake Mendota habitat and water quality.

I believe that these buildings should be built to net-zero ready standards and potentially include solar. We need to reach net-zero by 2050 - make sure this campus expansion supoorts that!

I have benefited from attending the UW Nelson Institute's Symposiums on climate change and urge UW Systems and UW Madison to get behind the/ir research and step up for sustainability and mitigation efforts. This development project is an opportunity to face climate change, plan accordingly, and to attract the attention of the rising legions of concerned students, both future and present.

The landing page of the UW-Madison website states: "Since its founding in 1848, this campus has been a catalyst for the extraordinary... As a public land-grant university and major research institution, it ... [is] solving real-world problems... Badgers are creating a better future for everyone." This statement does NOT describe the physical UW-Madison campus, which emits massive amounts of carbon dioxide, thereby contributing to climate change and creating a worse future for everyone. With respect to this "real-world problem," UW-Madison must now "act as a catalyst for the extraordinary" by requiring that all new buildings in the West Campus District produce zero emissions.

For passive solar, not solar panels. geothermal is good and so is wind power
