My name is Jessica Dempsey I am a Transgender Women living in Canada. Currently I have no protection under the Canadian Criminal Code against a motivated hate crime. This means if I was attacked because of my Transgender identity the perputator can not be charged with a hate crime. Unfortunately every Transgender Canadian is not protected under the Canadian Criminal Code. Farthermore, gender identity & gender expression is not included in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The result isTransgender Canadians like myself face daily discrimination accessing health care, proper identification, housing, employment, bathrooms, and safe places. To ensure equalty for Transgender Canadians please sign this petition which will be presented to the Federal Government of Canada.

Updates

April 25, 2016

The momentum behind this fight is proof that Canadians are done with the Federal Government ignoring our basic safety. Our lives are not up for debate and the pressure on Ottawa is finally becoming impossible for them to ignore.

Transgender rights were voted on and passed twice - only to be thrown out by an old-school Conservative senate. This is about doing what is right. Trans rights are human rights.

As a transgender Canadian, I agree with everything Jessica has said in her petition, It is abhorrent that gender identity is not protected under the Canadian Criminal Code, and that the right to free gender expression is not included in the Charter. In today's Canada, if someone is murdered for being transgender, that is not recorded as a hate crime. That is an absolute travesty of justice. Canada must add protections for trans people to both the Code and the Charter, or continue to condone the abuse and murder of all its transgender citizens.
