Support Clinical Supervision for all Medical Social Workers

Kaiser has supported providing LCSW supervision since the 1970’s in both the social services and psych depts. why are they withdrawing support for professional development now

Providing clinical supervision to newly hired medical social workers who posess and MSW and want their LCSW should be standard part of any social work job offer. It should not be considered a "fringe benefit" that is offered only if there's enough time or staffing. Improve staffing if need be. There is a national shortage of mental health providers, which the pandemic of 2020-2021 highlighted. Social workers are the the main professionals to fill this need. This is not the time to short-change American society or our patients of the next generation of well-trained social workers. I am an LCSW working as a medical social worker for 30 years and counting.

Clinical supervision is such a critical piece in developing as a professional. Having clinical supervision available within the agency you're working with makes a difference.

This is such an important issue! Social workers should be able to receive clinical supervision so they can advance in their careers and provide higher quality social work to their patients.

Our social workers support families in need of assistance and help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives, and it comes to me as a surprise that they don't have a licensed supervisor to keep them up to date with their professional development and other professional needs/support to keep showing up to work every day.

For far too long, Medical Social Workers have been denied this crucially important pathway to licensure, professional development, and increased financial stability. It's time to really make this happen.

with clinical supervision and support for my licensing process I will be able to provide crucial support to my patients.

This is the first organization I have worked for that does not offer or prioritize clinical supervision for social workers. In my experience, offering a pathway to licensure is the goal standard for professional development and retention of social workers. I have worked for much smaller, less resourced non-profit agencies, where clinical supervision was included for all unlicensed social workers. Clinical supervision improves quality of care for patients, enhances care coordination, increases job satisfaction for social workers and mitigates burnout.

I was told by the hiring manager who was not a SW, that they were working on getting LCSW supervision. When I mentioned my past hours may expire... she was sympathetic and seemed to make efforts, but have since left for another position. Without a mgr for 1+ yrs, its not been a priority in our department.

As a new grad, I came straight to working for Kaiser so to hear that I am unable to receive clinical supervision has been challenging and disappointing. I already have my ACSW but am unable to start accruing hours.

I was never offered Clinical Supervision at work. Whenever I asked for supervision, I was always turned down when other colleagues were able to receive it. I had to pay out of pocket and go outside of work hours.
