Having been a high school trapshooting coach for seven years I've personally seen kids participate and enjoy success at a sport that they could actually compete in and improve in. Trapshooting is a growing sport because EVERY kid gets to shoot, not just the best or the ones with the parents who have "deep" pockets.
Isn't part of going to school at any level about feeling like a part of a group and having a sense of belonging and self worth? I've always said that too much idol time for our youth is not a good thing!
And safety is ALWAYS the number one priority! Two rules in trapshooting--1). BE SAFE 2). HAVE FUN!
Thank you---I challenge you to go to a practice or meet and observe the "safe" environment that is trapshooting.

Shooting sports are no different than any other athletic endeavor. All competitive sports teach young people the intangible things they will need and use the rest of their lives. Respect, teamwork, mental discipline and responsibility are not frequently found in a textbook. All of these will be learned in this program, and the participants will be better people when they go through it.

This is a safe sport and beneficial to the students in learning firearms safety and use of a firearm for sporting and recreational purposes.

My son is a shining example of a non-traditional athlete. He has a disability that prevents him from rotating his arm fully, therefore keeping him from participating in traditional sports. This past season he tied for 5th place in Iowa's State Competition. He was able to shoot 99 out of 100 targets in one day. He has been able to experience being a part of a team that he would have never been able to experience because of his disability.

Shooting sports have been a good family activity for us. Watching my children participate in the meets is a memorable experience. The shooters are respectful to spectators and know how to safely handle a gun.

There are clubs at Simpson I do not agree with, however, I do not wish them banned. The 2nd amendment allows us to bear arms, and hunting is a positive activity that promotes responsibility. I researched this and the guns are not stored in the students possession. The club practices at a safe and modern facility. If Simpson bans this club, I, as a Past- President of the Alumni Assoc,, will sever my relationship with the College.

As an Iowa Natural Recourse Commissioner I have seen the Middle and High School shooting sports program supported by the Iowa DNR become one of the fastest growing school programs in the state. As a Hunter Education Instructor since 1996 in two states I have only experienced one student who went on to perform a criminal act with a firearm. He was the only student I ever failed. I am also unaware of any accidental shootings by any of my many students. Training and experience with firearms clearly reduces firearm accidents & criminal behavior.
